WOMAN DIES IN ROLLOVER CRASH

A woman is dead after a rollover crash in Pierce County.  The county sheriff’s office says Glenwood City resident Brenda Westbrook was northbound on Highway 63 near County Road Y early yesterday morning when she left the road.  Westbrook crossed the center line, hit the shoulder, rolled her truck, and was thrown out.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHIPPEWA MAN DUE IN COURT TODAY FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES

A Chippewa Falls man is charged with possessing child pornography.  A criminal complaint says David Hendrix admitted to sheriff’s deputies he searched for porn, but he said he didn’t have anything illegal on his devices.  Hendrix is making his initial court appearance in Chippewa County today.

THE HIGH COST OF LOW TEMPS

This year’s extreme winter cost University of Wisconsin-Madison millions of dollars.  The university announced yesterday it’s had to pay just shy of five-million dollars to repair 28 buildings on campus that were damaged during below-freezing temperatures back in January.  The university says that estimate could still rise because the school is still receiving repair invoices.

A.G WARNS ABOUT VIGILANTE STINGS

Wisconsin’s Attorney General is telling people not to go online and go after sexual predators.  Attorney General Josh Kaul yesterday warned against vigilante online stings.  Kaul said people who try and trap or embarrass online predators are hurting active and ongoing police investigations.  It’s unclear how many, if any, vigilante groups have approached sex offenders here in Wisconsin.

WOMAN INJURED WHILE FLAGGING TRAFFIC

A vehicle and pedestrian crash seriously injured a construction worker and we now know who that is. A construction zone flagger, 43 year old Vickie Williams from Odanah, had northbound traffic on Highway 112 stopped. A northbound Toyota RAV4, driven by 77 year old Gerald Robertson from Mason, came up to the construction zone and drove onto the right shoulder of the highway around four other stopped vehicles. BACK TO SCHOOL 101: NEW VAPING RULES FOR STUDENTS, COMMUTER REMINDERS

Students in Eau Claire who get caught vaping this year will get a second chance before they get a ticket.  The school district this week announced plans to send students caught vaping to a class, called Catch My Breath, instead of the old punishment which was a 50-dollar ticket and a one-day suspension.  Eau Claire schools are clear though, students caught vaping will still be suspended, they just won’t be fined.  The district says part of the idea is to

EC WARNS OF CLERK SCAM

The real Eau Claire County Clerk doesn’t call people and demand that they pay their fines.  Police in Eau Claire are warning of a new phone scam that’s making the rounds.  Investigators say people have gotten calls from a number that claims to be the clerk’s office, the scammer then demands a payment for past due fines, or else.  Police say the real clerk doesn’t call, and never demands payment.  If you get a call, simply hang-up.

VOTE AHEAD FOR WE ENERGIES RATE HIKE

We Energies customers in Wisconsin will likely pay more for power and gas, but a proposed settlement with regulators in Madison may mean those rate hikes will be smaller.  We Energies, along with Madison’s Wisconsin Public Service, are asking the state’s Public Service Commission to move ahead with planned rate increases.  The latest proposal would have We Energies customers pay one-point-three-percent more each month, instead of nearly six-percent more.  In all, We Energies says it needs 100-million-dollars more from customers.  There’s no word when

TRIAL DATE SET FOR WAUSAU MAN

A trial date is set for a man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend’s father in Wausau.  Lee Franck is charged in the beating death of Lyle Leith early last year.  Prosecutors say the two men disagreed about Franck’s relationship with Leith’s daughter.  The trial is set to begin February 18th.
