ROSA PARKS LEGACY STILL IN MOTION

The people who drive the buses in Eau Claire are remembering Rosa Parks.  Eau Claire Transit Manager Tom Wagener says they placed pictures of Parks on bus seats on a number of buses yesterday as part of Transit Equity Day. Wagener said bus companies across the country did the same. It was Parks’ refusal to give-up her bus seat in 1955 that helped spark the end of segregated public transportation.

UW LACROSSE LOOKS AHEAD TO ENROLLMENT ISSUES

The University of Wisconsin La Crosse is looking to solve its future enrollment problems. The school this month formed a long-term enrollment task force. Chancellor Joe Gow said the school had record enrollment this past fall, more than 10-thousand-students are on campus. But he said Wisconsin high schools are predicting a dip in graduates in the next five years or so. Gow said the school cannot keep doing the same thing and expect to keep-up with enrollment.

LAWMAKERS MILK AG LEGISLATION

There is some hope that lawmakers in Madison can finally agree on something, and find a way to help farmers. The Wisconsin Dairy Business Association yesterday said it supports the effort at the Wisconsin Capitol to find common ground for farmers. The association’s Tom Crave says it’s important for lawmakers to put forth new proposals to strengthen agriculture at this critical time. Republican lawmakers yesterday unveiled a series of proposals they hope will help farmers and dairymen in the state.

TOP DNC HOST OFFICIALS FIRED

The suspensions for the top two people on the Democratic National Convention’s Host Committee didn’t last long. The committee’s board yesterday fired president Liz Gilbert and chief of staff Adam Alonso. The decision came one day after complaints about a toxic work environment went public. The Host Committee board said Gilbert and Alonso “did not meet the ideals and expectations” of DNC planners. Former committee workers complained of bullying and in-fighting.

SUCK’UM BUCKY!

You can still get a plastic straw at a bar or restaurant in Madison, you just have to ask for it. The city council last night approved a plan to stop waiters and waitresses from handing-out plastic straws. The idea is to cut down on plastic waste. The ban applies to all restaurants, coffee shops, bars, cafes, sandwich stands, food trucks, and cafeterias in the city.

MINIMUM WAGE GETTING MAXIMUM PUSH

A bill is being introduced in the state legislature to boost the state minimum wage more than double.  The bill is similar to one proposed last year that never made it out of the General Assembly.  The proposed minimum is 15-dollars an hour.

We see the colors red and pink a lot this time of year, and when it comes to red, HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals are hosting American Red Cross blood drives. On Tuesday, February 25, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital is hosting a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in McDonald Hall, 2661 County Hwy I, Chippewa Falls. On Wednesday, March 11, HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital is hosting a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER STABBING

A person is in custody after a stabbing in Wausau.  Police say a man stabbed another man on South 9th Avenue Monday afternoon, leaving the victim with non-life-threatening injuries.  The charges against the suspect haven’t been announced.

JACKSON CO. MAN FACING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES

A Jackson County man already in jail in Rusk County is facing child pornography charges.  A criminal complaint says Nicholas Gharrity-Johnson admitted to investigators he used peer to peer file sharing to download child porn onto multiple devices.  Gharrity-Johnson was recently charged with ten counts of repeat possession of child porn.
