EC NAMES NEW SUPERINTENDENT

Eau Claire’s new superintendent is coming-in from out of state. The city’s school board last night named Michael Johnson as the next superintendent. He was last the assistant superintendent in the South Washington County School District in Minnesota. That’s in the St. Paul suburbs. Johnson will start in Eau Claire on July 1st.

You don’t have to pay someone to get an extension on your student loan payments. The state’s consumer protection division is warning people about potential coronavirus-related scams. DTACP’s Lara Sutherlin says one scam involves calls or emails that claim they can get people a break on their student loan payments. UNIONS JOIN LAWSUIT AGAINST SAFER AT HOME EXTENSION

A group of Wisconsin’s public sector labor unions are joining the fight against the legislature’s Safer at Home lawsuit. The teachers’ unions in Milwaukee and Madison, as well as the bus driver’s union, and SEIU yesterday all filed a brief to join the lawsuit that seeks to end Governor Evers’ Safer at Home order on May 11th. The White House’s top infectious disease specialist says there is a chance that Milwaukee could still host an in-person Democratic National Convention this summer. WI CASES JUMP

The number of people infected by the coronavirus increased by 208 cases in the last 24 hours.  Health officials today say nearly 63-hundred Wisconsinites have tested positive for COVID-19.  Three-hundred people have been killed by the disease.

CERTAIN WI PARKS REOPENING THIS WEEK

Over 30 state parks and forests will reopen in Wisconsin on Friday with a number of changes in store.  Beginning Friday an annual park sticker or trail pass will be required for a fee to visit state parks and trails.  The parks will open at 6 a.m. and most will close at 7 p.m. as opposed to 11:00 as in the past.  All restrooms on state properties will be closed as will shelters, playgrounds, nature centers and concession buildings.

VENTURING INTO NEW WATERS FOR OPENER

Fishing season opens this weekend. Eau Claire City-County health officials are reminding people to fish only those in their households and maintain at least six-feet of social distance. Public health officials encourage fishing close to home to help prevent community spread of COVID-19. Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources say they’ll be checking for boat registrations, fishing licenses, and making sure people are staying safe.

MARSHFIELD TAKES A SWING AT REOPENING

The Marshfield Parks and Recreation Department is opening some of its outdoor facilities after Governor Evers emergency order yesterday. Officials say parks, trails and green spaces, tennis and basketball courts, batting cages, soccer, softball and baseball fields, disc golf courses and skate parks are now open. Recreational programs, playground swings and structures, and department facilities remain closed until May 26th. Governor Evers order yesterday goes into effect tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
