UW SUPPORTS INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS STAYING IN U.S.

The head of the University of Wisconsin is lending his support to a lawsuit aimed at keeping foreign students inside the U.S. Tommy Thompson yesterday said the lawsuit, which Wisconsin joined, would spare international students from having to go home if they are not taking in-person classes. UW is planning for in-person classes this fall, but online classes after Thanksgiving. The question about international students is not just about learning. LACROSSE TO DISCUSS REMOVING STATUE

A familiar statue in La Crosse’s Riverside Park could be the next statue to go. La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat yesterday started the process to remove the Hiawatha statue from the park. The family of the artist who carved the statue say they want it back. Kabat also said that given the mood of the country, it is time to remove the statue. MUSEUM EXPERIMENTS WITH OPENING

The doors at Eau Claire’s Children’s Museum are back open, but you may want to wait before heading back and plan ahead. Museum managers reopened yesterday. There is a mask requirement for anyone over six. There is also a cap of just 12 people inside the museum at a time. Museum Director Michael McHorney says they are trying to keep everyone safe. NO NEW CORONAVIRUS DEATHS REPORTED IN WI

 The state reports fewer than 500 new cases of the coronavirus today, but the number of patients in hospitals rises.  Nineteen more people were admitted yesterday bringing the current number of hospitalized patients to 283.  There were no new deaths reported today so that toll remains at 820.  The are nearly 37, 000 COVID-19 cases confirmed in the state. TAX DEADLINE APPROACHING, HELP AVAILABLE

 Wednesday is Tax Day, delayed until July 15th this year because of the economic fallout from the coronavirus.  The IRS had also put collection on delinquent accounts on hold, but that hold also ends Wednesday.  Taxpayers can file Form 4868 by Wednesday to get an extension to October 15th, but that only gives people more time to file, not pay. A.G. KAUL JOINS LAWSUIT TO AFFECT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Attorney General Josh Kaul today announced a coalition of 18 attorneys general filed a lawsuit to stop a new federal rule that threatens to bar hundreds of thousands of international students from studying in the United States. WORKING ON WORKERS

 Wisconsin manufacturers are having a hard time finding people to work. A new survey from Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce show out of 150-employers, a majority think a workforce shortage is their number one issue. According to the survey, over 40-percent of respondents said they’ve also made temporary or permanent staff reductions.

CORN MAZE SALUTES HEALTHCARE WORKERS

A local orchard is showing off its corn maze. Ferguson’s Orchards in Eau Claire revealed their “Thank You Heroes” corn maze last week, honoring healthcare workers and first responders on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. Ferguson’s Orchard will open next month.
