PETCO UNLEASHES DONATION TO UW

The University of Wisconsin Veterinary School is the recipient of a 250-thousand-dollar donation.  The Petco Foundation announced over the weekend it’s donation is an honor of seven-year-old golden retriever Scout, who has been treated at the school for cancer.  Scout was featured in a Super Bowl ad yesterday.  He is a part of a national effort to raise funds for pet cancer research.

MISSING PERSON’S DAY RECOGNIZED

Today is National Missing Person’s Day.  About 23-hundred people a day are reported missing in the United States.  The Badger State produced one of the most notable stories of 2019 when 13-year-old Jayme Closs was found alive after being held by a kidnapper and murderer for nearly three months.  Wisconsin authorities are looking for three young people missing in the last month including Madison Bounds of Menomonie, Denetta Gray of Beloit and Teahjah Zolliecoffer from Milwaukee.  The 24-hour hotline for the National

FATAL CAR ACCIDENT IN MENOMONIE

It happened Sunday evening just after 8. The Dunn County Sheriff’s Office and Menomonie Fire and Rescue,were dispatched to the 3700 block of 420th St, in the Township of Menomonie for a one-vehicle crash with injuries. The initial crash investigation showed a 4-door sedan was southbound on 420th St approaching a curve. The driver, 19 year old Christopher Becker, was unable to negotiate the curve. MONEY POURS IN FOR WESTERN WI FLOOD DAMAGE

About a million-and-a-half dollars from Washington D.C. is coming to western Wisconsin to fight future flooding. Congressman Ron Kind announced that he secured the money last week. The one-point-six-million is headed to La Crosse, Monroe, and Vernon counties to deal with spring flooding there. Specifically, the money will go to the Coon Creek and West Fork Kickapoo watersheds, where floods in 2018 saw six dams either breached or flooded-over.

WI LATEST CORONAVIRUS STATUS RELEASED TODAY

We will know in a few hours if Wisconsin’s count of possible coronavirus cases will increase again. The State’s Department of Public Health Services on Friday said nine people have been tested so far. That’s up from seven earlier last week. There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Wisconsin. In fact, DHS says two people who were tested were confirmed as not having the virus.

SILVER ALERT CANCELLED

Authorities in Rib Lake are asking for help in finding a missing elderly man who said he was heading for Florida. The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office yesterday issued a Silver Alert for 70-year-old Robert Butler. Deputies say Butler hasn’t been seen since yesterday morning. PERSON FOUND SAFE NEAR SPARTA

Jackson County’s search and rescue dog is being credited for helping to find a person at risk on Saturday night. The dog, Gunner, and his handler helped in the search near Sparta. Authorities in Jackson County and in the city of Sparta are not offering many details about the person Gunner helped find.

School leaders in Chippewa Falls are getting ready for their next master plan. The school district held the first of what it’s calling ‘community conversations’ over the weekend. The question and answer session from Saturday will eventually be part of the six-year master plan for Chippewa Falls Schools. Parents and neighbors told school leaders to focus on what’s next for their students, and to make sure that kids are prepared for life after high school.

WI ACT SCORES SLIP

A new report says most high school juniors in the state of Wisconsin are not ready for college. The Wisconsin Policy Forum says just 48-percent of high school juniors in the state scored high enough on last year’s ACT to be deemed college-ready. English is the strongest subject for high schoolers who took the test, nearly 50-percent of kids scored high enough to qualify in English. But the numbers drop for math, science, and reading. THOUSAND YEAR VOTE GOES TO SUPREME COURT

Wisconsin’s Supreme Court is going to decide if former Governor Scott Walker’s thousand-year veto can stand. The high court last week agreed to hear a challenge in the case. Governors in Wisconsin have the power to change or erase numbers inside the budget when it comes to spending money. Governor Walker changed the numbers inside the 2017 budget to extend the effective date of a new tax law til 3018 instead of 2018.  Hence the name, the thousand-year veto.
