Testing Drops in Eau Claire

A lot fewer people are getting tested for the coronavirus in Eau Claire County. City-County Health Director Liesek Giese yesterday said she doesn’t know why testing has fallen-off so much. One day last week only 17 people were tested. Giese says the county plans to continue to test people. She says it’s the best way to measure the virus in the county.

Local Crews Head to Help

Hundreds of Xcel crewmen are doing their part to help people recover from Hurricane Laura. The utility says about 250 linemen, some from Wisconsin and Minnesota, are in Louisiana to help restore power after last week’s storms. More than a half million people lost power last week. There’s no word on how long it will take to get everyone’s lights back on.

WI Budget Shortfall May Fall Short of Projections

Wisconsin will face a budget shortfall next year, but it may not be nearly as bad as first thought. The Department of Revenue yesterday said tax collections for the last fiscal year, which ended in June, were off by only 112 million-dollars. Poll Workers Needed

The call is going out for volunteers on Election Day this fall. The Wisconsin Election Commission yesterday said it will likely need thousands of people to work the polls in November. The Election Commission is expecting shortages because the older people who usually work the polls are most at risk for the coronavirus. The state has relied on the National Guard to man the polls since the outbreak began, but there is no guarantee the Guard will be available again this November.

Kenosha Reports Arrests, Looks to Add Police Body Cams

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth says there have been many arrests during events following the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin.   Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser is promising money for body cameras for the sheriff’s department in his upcoming budget.    Kenosha, Wisconsin Mayor John Antaramian says there will continue to be a curfew in his city.

Special Session, No Solutions

The special session of the Wisconsin State Legislature is on recess without the lawmakers taking any action on police reform.  Governor Tony Evers said today that the people of Wisconsin don’t want another task force or more delays. Evers said the people want action and results now.  The governor said it’s disappointing there’s no sense of urgency from Republicans to work on such an important issue.

Madison Sets Up Ballot Drop Off Sites

More than 70-thousand people are requesting absentee ballots from the Madison City Clerk’s Office.  Election officials say today they’re trying to make it convenient for voters to drop off their ballots by setting up over 200 acceptance sites in city parks.  Poll workers will be monitoring those sites on Saturday, September 26th and Saturday, October 3rd to accept absentee ballots.  The city of Madison Clerk’s Office has listed all the parks that will accept absentee ballots.

WI Among First States to Study Coronavirus Vaccine

One of the first states in the country to study a new coronavirus vaccine will be Wisconsin.  UW Health announced today the upcoming study is of a vaccine developed by pharmaceutical company Astra-Zeneca.  The study is currently recruiting 16-hundred participants for the Phase 3 randomized, double-blind clinical trial.  There are 100 clinical sites around the country participating in the trial.

Overdose Awareness Day Offers Resources to Help

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.   Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul says it’s a day to remember Wisconsinites who have lost friends or family members to a drug overdose.  Kaul says there is help for those struggling with addiction and society needs to lift the stigma and shame that those who are addicted face everyday.  Kaul says anyone in need can dial 2-1-1 for personal assistance or CLICK HERE for a variety of available resources.

The Notable Case Log will include a listing of the total police calls for service by geographic district.
