The mayor of Stevens Point is using the words “recommending against” instead of “banning” when it comes to trick-or-treating this Halloween. Mayor Mike Wiza yesterday said it’s just too risky to have kids going house-to-house for candy this year. Instead, Wiza is suggesting that parents share pictures of their kids in costume, or pictures of their decorated houses with the city. Both the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the CDC are also recommending against trick-or-treating this year as well.

 During his stop in Eau Claire the Vice President talked about jobs, a COVID-19 vaccine and more. While at Midwest Manufacturing he was met with a crowd supporting the message of Made in America. Vice President Mike Pence says the U.S. has added millions of jobs in the past three years. Soldiers with the Wisconsin Army National Guard are back home after a year-long deployment.  About 150 soldiers return today after mobilization in the Middle East and Afghanistan.  A traditional homecoming ceremony was not held because of COVID-19 restrictions.  The soldiers are with the 829th engineer company which deployed overseas in October of last year and supported construction missions at 21 bases across the Middle East.

 COVID-19 rates are surging with the state averaging nearly two-thousand coronavirus cases a day including 24-hundred new cases today.  That is the second highest number of cases in one day since data collection started in March.  The positivity rate in the Badger State is nearly 17-percent, a new high.  The six additional deaths reported in last 24 hours brings the coronavirus death toll statewide to 1,065.

U.S. Postal inspectors are encouraging anyone who sees suspicious activity involving the mail to report it to police and postal inspectors.  The statement comes after absentee ballots and other mail was found in a ditch in Outagamie County in the area of Highway 96 and CD on Monday.  It has not been disclosed whether the ballots were being delivered to voters or mailed from voters.

 Fifty COVID-19 cases are reported setting a new weekly record in Chippewa County. Health officials say five people are hospitalized which is also a new record. Cases of COVID-19 have increased especially in cities with a university. Chippewa County has zero deaths related to the virus. The Altoona City Council will vote on preliminary designs for a new condo complex buildout today. A public hearing was held Tuesday where a dozen residents expressed opposition to the project. Many of them said having 36 townhomes built on four acres of land is too dense and will bring traffic problems to the neighborhood. They also worry that there will not be enough room for children to safely play.

Altoona police say they’re still looking for 25-year old Austin Hurst. He got away after leading police on a chase. He jumped out of the moving car then fled on foot Sunday. He has several warrants for his arrest involving drugs, counterfeit money and false identification. Witnesses with any information are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers.

Wisconsin’s latest unemployment snapshot shows a better job picture across the state. The Department of Workforce Development yesterday said unemployment rates fell in all 12 of Wisconsin’s metro areas. DWD says Janesville-Beloit saw the biggest drop. In fact, DWD says unemployment fell in 71 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties. Only Menomonee County saw its unemployment rate tick-up last month.
