Readin’, ‘Ritin, and Relocating?

Parents across Wisconsin have a chance to change their kids’ school starting next week. The state’s open enrollment period begins on Monday. Open enrollment allows some students to move to other schools, as long as there’s room. The state’s Department of Public Instruction says parents can apply to change schools between February 1st and April 30th. The change would then start next year.

Daily COVID-19 Cases Dip Below 1K

The State Department of Health confirms fewer than a thousand cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.  The 946 cases reported today increases the total number to nearly 534-thousand since the beginning of the pandemic a year ago.  There are eight deaths confirmed today, raising the death toll statewide to 57-hundred residents. Public Asked for Help in Missing Teen Case

Marshfield police are asking for help finding a missing teenage boy.  Authorities say 16-year-old Wyatt Canon is suspected of stealing a blue 2003 Jeep Liberty with North Carolina plates from relatives on Thursday.  His family says he is not taking needed medication for serious mental health issues and they believe he could be in crisis.  Marshfield police have posted a picture of Canon who could be traveling to Minnesota or the Dakotas where he does have family.

Fire Claims Another Life

 A second child is dead from injuries suffered in a fire in the Village of Blue River.  The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said today 14-year-old Barbara Hurley has died from injuries sustained in a house fire on Saturday.  A man and 12-year-old boy were also killed in the blaze.  A 15-year-old boy remains hospitalized in Madison in critical condition and two other adults were treated and released from the hospital.

UWEC to Offer COVID-19 Rapid-Response Testing

Free rapid-response COVID-19 surge testing will be available to the community in February on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus. The community surge testing, which was conducted at Memorial High School the past two months, will now take place at Zorn Arena on UW-Eau Claire’s lower campus. Antigen testing for UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students is also being conducted at Zorn Arena, but community members will be tested at different times than the campus community. Deadly Crash Leaves a Community Mourning

We now know the name of the teenager killed in a crash heading into the weekend. Eau Claire Police responded to a crash with injury in the 1600 block of Meadow Lane on Friday, January 22nd just before 10:30 at night. Due to injuries sustained in the crash, one passenger has died. The Eau Claire City-County Health Department is releasing revised COVID-19 Community Expectations. These Community Expectations were last revised in November 2020 when we were experiencing a significant and dangerous surge in cases. The local data does still show that we need to keep up our basic safety precautions of keeping 6ft distance, wearing masks, frequent hand washing, and getting tested if experiencing any symptoms. Chetek Man Arrested After Chase

A report of stalking leads to a chase and eventual arrest. It was on Sunday, January 24th a little before 3 a.m., when the Barron County Sheriff’s Department received a call from a female that her ex-boyfriend was stalking her and following her around the City of Chetek. WI Begins Vaccinations for 65 and Older Population

People 65-and-older in Wisconsin will begin receiving COVID-19 vaccines today. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says that includes about 700-thousand people. They say the state currently gets about 70-thousand first-dose vaccines per week from the federal government.
