Prescription for WI Settlement?

Wisconsin is looking at hundreds of millions of dollars from the national opioid settlement. Attorney General Josh Kaul yesterday said Wisconsin’s share will be about 400-million-dollars. In all, the states will split 26-billion from the makers of opioid pain pills. Kaul says the state has about a month to finalize the deal. He says Wisconsin will get the maximum if local governments join the settlement as well. But that would mean they would have to drop their lawsuits against the same opioid pill makers.

Make Room for Another Candidate

There’s another Democrat running for U.S. Senate in Wisconsin. Milwaukee Alderwoman Chantia Lewis became the ninth candidate yesterday. Lewis says she brings a new perspective to the race to potentially replace Republican Senator Ron Johnson next year. Her entry comes one day after Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes also jumped into the race. The crowded field will go before voters in August of next year.

Kayleigh’s Law Introduced at WI Capitol

There’s a push to offer more protections to sexual assault survivors in Wisconsin. State Rep. Barb Dittrich yesterday introduced Kayleigh’s Law at the Capitol in Madison. The idea is to allow victims of sexual assault, particularly children, to get lifetime orders of protection. Currently, those orders of protection are capped at four years for adult victims and two years for victims who are children here in the state. UW Apologizes for Calendar Conflict

UW Madison’s chancellor is apologizing for starting school on Rosh Hashanah this year. Chancellor Rebecca Blank sent an email to students and faculty members yesterday, apologizing for starting the school year on the holiest of holidays for Jewish people. Blank said it was an ‘overlap which we should have identified’ earlier. Appleton is looking to refresh its brand, and the city is willing to spend a half-million dollars to do it. Mayor Jake Woodford says they are looking at a new logo and a new marketing strategy for the city. Appleton’s logo is 27-years old. The mayor says having a new, clear and consistent brand could help with recruiting efforts and could bring more jobs to Appleton.

The crowd for today’s Milwaukee Bucks parade will make Tuesday’s crowd of 65-thousand in the Deer District look small. Milwaukee is expecting hundreds of thousands of people to turn out for the championship parade. It starts at 11 a.m. today at the Museum Center Park and will go to the Deer District outside of Fiserv. Police Investigate Accidental Shooting

Eau Claire Police say they could have more answers later today about a deadly accidental shooting. It happened yesterday at a home on the city’s north side. Police will only say the victim is a juvenile, but they are not saying anything about an age, gender, or any other details. Police say they could have an update in the case later today.

EC Man Found Safely After Silver Alert

The search for a missing Eau Claire man has come to a happy ending. Authorities issued a Silver Alert for 85-year-old Gerald Golke after he didn’t return home yesterday afternoon. His family said he’s new to town and isn’t familiar with the area. Police canceled the Silver Alert yesterday evening after Golke was found safe.

WI Coronavirus Cases Tick Up; Hospitalizations Steady

It’s another snapshot of how coronavirus cases in Wisconsin are growing. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said 29 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties are now seeing ‘high’ coronavirus activity. That’s 40-percent of counties in the state. Crews Go Under High Bridge

The first task in repairing Eau Claire’s High Bridge is to see just how much damage there is. City engineering director Leah Ness yesterday said that’s what crews are doing this week. The city council last week voted to save the bridge, which is closed because of a crack in its foundation.
