Barnes Raises Bucks

U.S. Senate hopeful Mandela Barnes reports raising over a million dollars since announcing his intention to run for Congress about ten weeks ago.  The Wisconsin Democratic Lieutenant Governor is seeking the party nomination and the Senate seat currently held by Ron Johnson.  Johnson has not confirmed whether he will run for re-election.  Barnes meanwhile announced his one-point-one-two-million-dollar fundraising tally today.

Tip Leads to Arrest in DeForest Hit and Run

DeForest police find the semi tractor-trailer involved in a hit-and-run and make an arrest.  Police today say a person came forward with information that allowed them to make an arrest in the hit-and-run on Monday that injured a pedestrian.  Authorities have not identified the suspect except to say he is a 54-year-old man.  The victim is reported in stable condition.

South Farwell St. Closed, Detour Planned

South Farwell Street will be closed starting Wednesday, October 13, starting at 7:00 am, from East LakeStreet to Main Street for traffic control placement. A signed detour will be in place. The street is expected to be reopened Thursday, October 14 by 7:00 pm, pending weather. The planned detour is East Lake Street to South Dewey Street to Main Street.

Madison Grabs Top Spot

Madison has grabbed the top spot on another ‘best places to live’ list. The website Livability.com yesterday released its Top 100 Best Places to Live, and Madison came in at number one. Madison gets high marks for its economy, the university, and the opportunities for people who are both old and young. Help Heats Up for Cold Weather Bills

If you’re worried about making your home energy payments this winter, the State of Wisconsin is offering help. Home Energy Plus is a state-wide heating assistance program, and administrator Barbara Klug says you don’t have to own a home to be eligible for assistance. Back to the Re-Drawing Board

The process to draw Eau Claire’s new political map is underway. The city council has to redraw its district and voting lines this year. That process began yesterday. Eau Claire is hoping to draw a new map and vote on it by the middle of next month. The changes mean some people in Eau Claire will be voting for new city council members, and may mean some people are voting in new polling places.

WI Schools See Lawsuits, Signatures to Recall

A second parent is suing over masks at her kids’ school. Gina Kildahl filed a federal lawsuit in Madison earlier this week. She wants the court to order Fall Creek schools to require masks for all kids. Kildahl says her son caught the coronavirus at school. She says he wore a mask, but other students didn’t. Her lawsuit is the second that’s being paid for by the political action committee of progressive candidate and Minocqua Brewing Company owner Kirk Bangstad.

WI Lower Populations See High Virus Activity

Almost all of the counties with the highest coronavirus activity in Wisconsin are small. The state’s Department of Health Services says 17 counties in the state have critically high case activity. Many are in western Wisconsin or the Fox Valley. They all have over 10 percent positivity rates, but that could be a factor of low populations as much as anything else. Wells Offline, Water Still Flowing

There will be no water shortage in Eau Claire, even with fewer wells. The city’s Utilities Manager, Lane Berg, yesterday said Eau Claire’s nine remaining wells will provide more than enough water for the city. Eau Claire has taken 16 wells offline because of PFAS contamination. The water from those wells is being dumped.
