WI State Fair CEO to Retire

It’s the end of an era at the Wisconsin State Fair. Fair CEO Kathleen O’Leary yesterday said she’s going to retire at the end of October. She’s been with the fair for the past 24 years and has been CEO for the past five. O’Leary didn’t give a reason for her retirement but thanked everyone who’s been involved with or has been to the fair over the past two decades. State Fair managers will pick a new CEO before O’Leary is out.

Bacon Prices Pork Up

If you want to bring home the bacon, you better expect to open up your wallet.  Consumer price index data shows the average price for a slab of bacon has spiked 28 percent in the last year.  Supply chain issues and inflation are both believed to be factors in the rising pork prices.  And unfortunately for bacon lovers, analysts say don’t expect prices to fall anytime soon.

Three Lives Lost in Plane Crash

Three people are dead following the crash of a small plane in Vilas County.   The FAA says the twin engine plane took off from Rhinelander Airport yesterday morning and crashed near Eagle River.  Authorities today say the pilot and two passengers were killed.  The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause of the crash.

You know it’s the holiday season when the Trans-Siberian Orchestra announces their winter tour.  The yuletide rockers will be hitting the road in two companies starting in November, and will play nearly a hundred shows before the tour ends on December 30th.  The tour is celebrating the 25th anniversary of TSO’s triple-platinum LP “Christmas Eve and Other Stories.  The Trans-Siberian Orchestra Winter Tour starts November 17th in Green Bay, Wisconsin and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

MKE Taps Out

There are no more 100-dollar gift cards for people looking to get paid to get vaccinated in Milwaukee. Mayor Tom Barrett yesterday said the city gave away the gift cards to the first one-thousand people who got their shots. Milwaukee started offering the incentives just last week. As of now, 62-percent of adults in Milwaukee have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine.

Regency Inn On Way Out

The Regency Inn & Suites is going away. Eau Claire’s city council last night voted to replace the troubled motel with new apartments. The Regency has had a history with crime, drugs, and prostitution. The hope is to build a new, 53-unit apartment complex to replace it. New Plan Levels Up Animal Abuse Charges

It could soon be a felony to abuse animals in Wisconsin. The state Senate passed a plan yesterday that increases the penalties and broadens the definition of animal abuse. What is now a misdemeanor abuse charge would be changed to a felony. And, what is currently a felony would be bumped-up to include a six-year prison sentence. DNR Warns of New Deer Disease

There’s another thing for deer hunters to be on the look-out for in western Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Natural Resources says it’s found epizootic hemorrhagic disease in samples from deer in La Crosse County. The disease is not harmful to people, but it can kill deer. Connecting to Culture, Needs at Fort McCoy

There’s talk of a ‘disconnect’ in donations to the refugees at Fort McCoy. Some of the 13-thousand refugees at the base say they are having trouble getting halal meals and worry that some of the clothes that are being donated are not ‘culturally competent.’ UW-Eau Claire history professor Dr. Selika Ducksworth-Lawton says people in Wisconsin need to remember that the Afghan culture is much different than what people here are used to. She says cultural disconnects can lead to problems.
