MKE Violence Hits Children

An 11-year-old and her five-year-old sister are among the victims of Milwaukee’s latest weekend of shootings. Police say the two girls were sitting in a car Saturday night when someone opened fire near Sherman and Burleigh. The 11-year-old, identified as Ta’Niyla Parker, later died at the hospital. In all, five people were shot in Milwaukee. Police are looking for whoever fired the shots that killed the little girls.

Mertz Still “Hertz”

Graham Mertz is out of the hospital, but no one is saying when he will return to the field for the Badgers. Mertz went down during Saturday’s drubbing by Michigan. The team said he was treated for an unspecified chest injury. Wisconsin lost that game, 38-17, to fall to 1-3 on the season.

Water Rescue Under Investigation

No one is saying how a 50-year-old woman ended up in Lake Michigan near Algoma. The Kewaunee County Sheriff Office says it got a call Friday morning about a woman who’d been pulled out of the water by some fishermen. She was suffering from hypothermia. She was taken to the hospital. The sheriff’s office searched the shore and the water near Algoma but didn’t find any others in the water.

WI DHS Coronavirus Updates

It’s the latest milestone in Wisconsin’s battle with the coronavirus. The state’s Department of Health Services says over eight-thousand people have now died from or with the virus. Wisconsin topped eight-thousand deaths last Thursday. Since April of 2020, just three people under 19-years old have died from or with the virus. DHS says over 90-percent of coronavirus deaths are among people 60-plus. EC Schools Tackle Budget

We’re going to get a look at just how much Eau Claire schools are going to spend over the next year. The city’s school board is set to vote on its preliminary budget tonight. Eau Claire schools have seen surpluses the past two years because of the massive amount of federal aid for the coronavirus. No one is saying just how much extra the school district will see this time.

Bloomer Back to Masks

Kids in Bloomer schools are the latest to be told to mask-up. Superintendent Brian Misfeldt sent a letter home to parents on Friday explaining that masks will be required for the next week. Bloomer schools have 70 kids at home because of quarantine or isolation. The superintendent is not saying how many kids have actually tested positive for the virus.

WI Ballot Battle Continues

We’re headed for a showdown in Wisconsin’s election investigation. Former justice Mike Gableman on Friday issued subpoenas to Dane, Milwaukee, Kenosha, Racine, and Brown counties along with the state’s Elections Commission. He is looking for communications between election managers and outside groups, most notably the Mark Zuckerburg-funded Center For Tech and Civic Life. The subpoenas are the first in the investigation. Some of the clerks have refused to cooperate with Galbeman’s probe, and it remains to be seen how cooperative they

WI Servers Short on Help

Anyone who’s been out to eat in the past six months already knows what a new study into the state’s bars and restaurants says. Restaurants across Wisconsin are busier but have fewer people working. The Wisconsin Policy Forum released the report last week. It says sales are up almost seven-percent compared to July of 2019, before the coronavirus. But employment in bars and restaurants is down almost nine-percent compared to the same summer. That means more customers and fewer people to wait on them.

Boo to the Flu

It’s flu season, and Wisconsin’s public health managers are talking about flu shots. The state’s Department of Health Services says even with the coronavirus people should get their flu shot. Flu season typically starts in October and runs through the spring. Unlike the coronavirus, the flu is deadly for children and the elderly. Wisconsin essentially didn’t have a flu season last year, most cases were classified as part of the coronavirus outbreak.

Grand Theatre to Open Again

If you want to see a show at the Grand Theater in Wausau, you’ll need your coronavirus shot or a negative test. Theater managers last week said they will require proof of vaccination or a negative coronavirus test in order to get in. The theater already requires its workers to be fully vaccinated. The theater is opening this month, for the first time in 18 months. The first performance at The Grand is Thursday.
