Lights Out On Winter Moratorium

If you owe on your power bill from over the winter, today is your last day to work something out.  The state’s Public Service Commission says today is the final day of Wisconsin’s utility disconnection moratorium.  That means power companies can turn off the lights for anyone who owes on their bill as of tomorrow. Wisconsin Gets to Work

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate continues to fall. The state’s Department of Workforce Development says the latest jobless numbers put the unemployment rate at two-point-eight percent for March. DWD says over three million people in the state are working, though businesses say they need more employees. Wisconsin’s jobless rate is almost at its all-time low, which the state saw back in 1999.

DHS Shifts Coronavirus Approach

Wisconsin is changing how it reports its coronavirus information.  The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said it made a number of changes to its COVID-19 dashboard.  The biggest change is that the state will no longer track vaccinations on a weekly basis.  Instead, DHS will report vaccine doses on a monthly basis.  DHS says it is making the changes to stay in line with CDC guidance.

Another Offer For Kohl’s

There’s another offer to buy Kohl’s. Reuters was the first to report on an offer from the owners of the Vitamin Shoppe. The company is offering about 69 dollars a-share, which comes to nearly nine billion-dollars. Kohl’s rejected an offer of 64 dollars a-share, or about nine billion-dollars, back in January. Company leaders said that offer was too low.

More WI Counties Confirm Avian Flu

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has identified new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Columbia, Polk and Sheboygan counties. DATCP and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are working with animal health officials in response efforts. HPAI has now been found in seven domestic flocks across Wisconsin since March, when the virus was first confirmed in the state. Suspect in Murder Waves Right to Speedy Trial

One of the men charged with killing another man near the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus waves his right to a speedy trial.  Pedro Santiago-Marquez appeared in court this week where his attorney said there’s too much new evidence to have a trial next week.  His trial was rescheduled for July 18th.  Santiago-Marquez is accused of killing Jason Mendez-Ramos over a drug debt back in September.

WI Man Accused of Stabbing Family Members

A man’s arrested in Monroe after being accused of trying to stab his mother with a knife.  Police say they were called to the 900 block of 24th Street early Wednesday morning where a man was reportedly assaulting his 63-year-old mother with a knife.  The woman was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries while the suspect’s brother received minor injuries.  Ryan Lewis was arrested nearby about a half-hour later and charged with substantial battery with a knife.

Stolen Car in Stevens Point Leads to Arrest in Missouri

A man accused of stealing a car in Stevens Point is arrested in southern Missouri.  Police started looking for William Gentry Monday night after someone reported their car stolen from a Target parking lot.  Police say Gentry was arrested at a motel in Springfield, Missouri yesterday.  He’s from Tennessee.

Two Democrats Leaving WI Assembly

Two more Democrats are leaving the Wisconsin Assembly.  State Representative Nick Milroy of South Range and State Representative Sondy Pope of Mount Horeb announced today they won’t run for reelection this year.  Milroy was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly in 2008 and Pope was elected in 2002.
