UWEC Plans Vaccination Clinic

UW-Eau Claire is hoping to get more students to get their shots.  The school yesterday announced a back-to-class vaccination clinic today.  Students are due back for their first day of classes on Monday.  School leaders say they want to get as many people vaxxed or boosted as possible. If you are interested in a shot, today’s clinic will be at the Haas Fine Arts Center from noon til 4 p.m.

Mayo Has Rx For Campus Upgrades

The Mayo Clinic is growing at its Onalaska campus.  The hospital yesterday unveiled a new eight million-dollar imaging suite.  The centerpiece are two new MRI machines.  Mayo’s Lisa Archer says the new machines mean patients in western Wisconsin won’t have to go as far to be able to get state of the art scans and images as part of their care.

Another Hat in Race Ring

Another Republican enters the race for Wisconsin governor.  Today former U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Nicholson announced his candidacy for governor.  Nicholson is a business consultant and former Democrat who lost a bid for U.S. Senate as a Republican in 2018.  The only other major Republican candidate to announce a campaign is former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch.

Deadly Fire in Antigo

One person’s dead after a house fire in northern Wisconsin.  The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at a house in Antigo.  The fire department says firefighters found a person dead inside the house while fighting the fire.  The victim hasn’t been identified and their cause of death hasn’t been released.  The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State of Wisconsin Fire Marshall’s Office.

Green and Gold Gives Back

In December 2021, green and gold cornerback, Shemar Jean-Charles hosted a GET one, GIVE one blanket campaign to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s and dementia. For every $35 donation made to his Walk to End Alzheimer’s® team, participants received a green and gold blanket and Jean-Charles pledged to donate a blanket to a senior care community in their honor. The campaign raised more than $14,000, and more than 300 blankets will be donated to senior care communities across Wisconsin.

Life Sentence Handed Down For WI Murder

The Janesville man who told police he heard voices before he killed his grandmother could spend the rest of his life in a state mental institution.  A judge yesterday sentenced 37-year-old Jamie Beggs to a life sentence for killing his 97-year-old grandmother last June.  Beggs will be eligible for parole after 25 years.  Beggs pleaded guilty to the crime, the judge found him to be suffering from mental disease or defect at the time.

COVID-19 Testing Scams Test Patience, Not Patients

There is a warning to be careful where you get your next coronavirus test.  The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said as more people get tested for the virus, more scammers and shady operators are popping-up.  DHS is warning people never to pay cash for a test, double check to make sure the test is reputable, and make sure that the testing company will report your results to state and federal public health managers. Some Howling About WI Wolf Hunt

Wisconsin’s wolf hunting policy may no longer include a specific number of wolves.  Department of Natural Resources board member Greg Kazmierzski said yesterday the state should drop the idea of a population count, and focus instead on whether the wolf population in Wisconsin should be allowed to grow or shrink.  Wisconsin’s original hunting policy set a goal of just 350 wolves in the state.  The latest wolf estimate says there are over a thousand wolves in Wisconsin.  Advocates say the 350 wolf number is
