WI POLITICAL CLIFF NOTES; FUELING SUPPORT FOR GAS TAX, MANSION ART IS BACK

A Republican Assembly leader says he’ll consider Governor Tony Evers’ plan to increase the gas tax.  Yesterday, the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee Co-Chairman John Nygren said the plan could be “an opportunity for us to find common ground.”  When pressed by reporters before a hearing on Evers’ transportation budget, the Marinette Republican stressed that he’s not going to say yes or no right now.  But, he noted that the Assembly has been in favor of funding solutions for transportation.  Evers’ plan would raise the 32.9-cent-a-gallon gas tax by eight cents, to 40.9 cents.

ART IS BACK ON THE WALLS

Governor Tony Evers is reintroducing a portrait to the governor’s mansion that former Governor Scott Walker took down eight years ago.  The painting called “Wishes in the Wind” by artist David Lenz is now hanging above the fireplace in the governor’s mansion.  It was unveiled yesterday and Lenz called the picture’s return “bittersweet in reverse.”   The picture depicts three children blowing bubbles on a snowy street in a neighborhood Milwaukee neighborhood.  Evers said “Looking into their eyes should remind us of the responsibility we all share to work together to ensure a bright future for all kids in Wisconsin.”
