With so many events and activities crammed into our Summer months you might be feeling overwhelmed or exhausted before you’ve even gotten started. Hey, we get it.

Which is why we take a tiny moment like this on Saturday mornings to simply slow down. It’s a “scroll down memory lane” to look back at events that happened on this day in history before we set out to make new history today. So, grab your favorite sippin’ drink and let’s scroll!

Today is Saturday, May 23rd, the 143rd day of the year.

On this day:

In 1873, Canada created the North West Mounted Police. They would later become known as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

In 1879, Iowa State College established the first veterinary school in the United States.

In 1934, bank robbers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were shot and killed by police in Bienville Parish, Louisiana.

In 1937, industrialist John D. Rockefeller died at the age of 97.

In 1945, Nazi leader Heinrich Himmler committed suicide while imprisoned in Germany.

In 1995, the remainder of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was demolished. The site was cleared to make way for a memorial to the victims who died when a bomb blast leveled a large portion of the building.

In 1999, professional wrestler Owen Hart, also known as “The Blue Blazer,” died when he fell 78 feet from a cable as he was being lowered into the ring at a World Wrestling Federation show in Kansas City, Missouri.

In 2002, golf Hall Of Famer Sam Snead died at the age of 89.

In 2013, the Boy Scouts of America voted to allow gay boys to join the organization but upheld its ban on gay scout leaders.

In 2016, a Baltimore judge said bike patrol officer Edward Nero is not guilty of all charges stemming from the arrest of Freddie Gray before his in-custody death. He was one of six officers facing charges. Nero was charged with arresting the 25-year-old Gray without justification. He was also accused of failing to secure Gray in a police van, where he suffered a fatal spinal injury.

In 2016, the United States lifted a ban on selling military equipment to Vietnam. President Obama says it’s the next step in normalizing relations between the two former enemies.

In 2021, Phil Michelson became the oldest person to win a golf major when he won the PGA Championship. He was 50-years-old when he took home the win.

In 2021, illustrator and author Eric Carle died at the age of 91 form kidney failure. Carle is best known for his children’s books including “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”

In 2022, New York City removed it’s last public pay phones in Midtown Manhattan.

That brings us here to this day.
