Some call it the “unofficial start of Summer” but Memorial Day has a far deeper meaning.
On this Monday we take a moment to reflect on Memorial Day as many of us have events planned that outline the freedoms we enjoy because of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. It’s for those people that we gather today.
A quick history lesson: Memorial Day is a federal holiday held the last Monday in May, is the nation’s annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women.
Here in our state, you will notice our flags flying lowered.
Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order #227 ordering the flags of the United States and the state of Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff on Monday, May 27, 2024, as the state and nation recognize Memorial Day to honor and remember the nation’s fallen heroes, as well as the family members and loved ones they left behind.
Executive Order #227 will be in effect from sunrise to 12 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2024, and is available here.
In addition, the governor shared a video message with Wisconsinites recognizing Memorial Day and honoring service members. The governor’s video message is available here, and a transcript of the message is available below.
Hey there, folks. Governor Tony Evers here.
Each year, on Memorial Day, we continue a tradition that has been part of our nation’s history for over a century.
Today, we honor and remember the generations of brave and selfless service members—soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen—who have laid down their lives to protect and secure our freedoms, as well as freedoms of countless others.
Our service members exemplify great courage, selflessness, dedication, and determination, and we owe so much to the brave individuals who have given their lives in battle.
They will forever be heroes.
As we recognize this solemn day, I join Wisconsinites and folks across the country in paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, as well as the family members and loved ones they left behind.
On behalf of our state, we share our deepest condolences with you and gratitude for your loved one’s selfless service in defense of our nation and our shared values.
Their service, bravery, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Thank you.
In Altoona, there will be a Memorial Day Dedication at Tribute Honor Mall
River Prairie Park will be hosting a “Huey” flyover in honor of Vietnam Veterans and 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War on Monday, May 27, 2024, at 1 PM. The ceremony will last approximately 30 minutes and all are invited. Parking will be available throughout the park and spectators are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
Around our area there are opportunities to pay tribute to the veterans of the Eau Claire area at memorials in Eau Claire, Osseo, Cadott, Lake Hallie, and more.
As we enjoy our days and freedoms-not only on this Memorial Day, but always-may we all take time to truly recognize and appreciate all of those who gave all to create this country and allow us to live the lives we love.
