There is a new request to get Brendan Dassey out of prison.
Steven Avery’s former lawyers, Dean Strang and Jerry Buting, wrote Governor Tony Evers this week asking that he shorten Dassey’s sentence. Dassey is serving life in prison for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. He’s said he was coerced into confessing to playing a role in the crime. Dassey tried for a pardon from the governor, but that was rejected. He was almost freed by a federal judge back in 2016, but lost the opportunity on appeal. Dassey isn’t eligible for parole until 2048.
