Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is banning almost all no-knock warrants following the police shooting death of a 22-year-old man. Protests took place downtown Friday night as Amir Locke’s mother called for justice.
Locke was apparently asleep and was holding a firearm, which his family’s lawyer says was legally owned, when he was shot and killed by police in a pre dawn raid on Wednesday. He was reportedly not the target of the raid and not listed on any search warrants. The mayor’s ban will still allow no-knock warrants to be served in cases of imminent danger.
Minneapolis Interim Police Chief Amelia Huffman addressed the deadly shooting during a tense press conference on Thursday night, before the mayor’s ban was announced yesterday.
