Opening weekend for gun deer season is showing higher turnout from last year. More hunters statewide were able to get a buck or a doe in the first weekend of the nine-day season.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports more than 95-thousand deer were hunted during opening weekend, compared to just over 93-thousand last year.
And after two accidental harvests, Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources is asking hunters to watch out for elk.
According to the D-N-R, around 400-elk roam around Wisconsin and many wander into popular hunting areas. The D-N-R has a comparison guide online to help hunters identify elk over deer.
