It can sometimes feel like a whirlwind trying to keep up with every day life and as of Monday we start to “officially” say farewell to the dog days of summer and welcome back the routine of a school year, the return of cooler temps and those beautiful Fall colors. It’s all a reminder that change is the only constant. But, we can try to slow it down a bit this morning with our weekly “scroll down memory lane.” It’s a simple look back at events that happened on this day in history before we head out to make new history today.

In 1877, Mormon religious leader Brigham Young died.
In 1958, the Air Force Academy opened in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 1977, three people were arrested in Memphis, Tennessee, for trying to dig up the body of Elvis Presley. Vernon Presley soon arranged to have the bodies of his son and his wife moved to the grounds of Graceland mansion.
In 1982, actress Ingrid Bergman died at the age of 67. She starred in several classic films during her career including “Casablanca” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”
In 1987, actor Lee Marvin died of a heart attack at age 63. Marvin’s credits include the films “The Dirty Dozen,” “Cat Ballou,” and “Paint Your Wagon.”
In 1995, the tape recording of police detective Mark Fuhrman shouting racial slurs was heard at the OJ Simpson murder trial.
In 1996, golfer Tiger Woods made his professional debut when he teed off in the first round of the Greater Milwaukee Open.
In 1997, Netflix was founded by Marc Randolph and Reed Hasting in Scotts Valley, California as an online DVD rental business.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina tore into the Gulf Coast on this date leaving devastating effects in the city of New Orleans, and surrounding areas. Thousands of people who didn’t or couldn’t leave the city were trapped in the flooded city without food, clean water or power. Many took refuge at the city’s Superdome and Convention Center. The Category 5 Hurricane is estimated to have caused over 100-billion-dollars in damage and killed more than 15-hundred people in Louisiana.
In 2008, presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain announced Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his choice for a running mate for the 2008 presidential election. In doing so, Palin, a 44-year-old mother of five and the first female governor in Alaska’s history, became the first woman ever to be picked as a vice presidential candidate by the Republican party.
In 2013, hundreds of fast food workers went on strike demanding the hourly wage be 15-dollars an hour.
In 2016, actor Gene Wilder died at age 83. He is known for his roles in the films “Blazing Saddles,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” “Silver Streak,” and “Young Frankenstein.”
In 2017, US National Weather Service announced Hurricane Harvey set a rainfall record of 51-point-88 inches.
In 2018, the body of former Senator, John McCain, lied in state in the Arizona State Capitol. McCain is only the third person to do so in Arizona’s State Capitol over the past 40 years.
In 2021, Hurricane Ida made landfall as a Category four storm near Port Fourchon, Louisiana on the 16-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
In 2021, actor Ed Asner died at age 91. Asner was known for his role on the TV series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and the spin-off “Lou Grant.” He was also known for playing Santa in the hit Christmas movie “Elf.”
