Delay in Case Pushes Trial to Fall

The ongoing problems with Milwaukee County’s former medical examiner are pushing the homicide trial for a former Milwaukee police officer back, again.

The judge in Officer Michael Mattioli’s trial yesterday ordered a new medical examiner to prepare a new report on the death of Joel Acevedo. Mattioli is accused of choking Acevedo to death back in 2020 while he was off-duty. The case has been delayed, in part because Milwaukee County M.E. Brian Peterson abruptly resigned last fall. Peterson continues to refuse to testify in the case, and the judge yesterday said he had no choice but to order a new report so the new medical examiner can testify in the future. The case likely won’t go to trial until this fall, at the earliest.
