Speeding Leads to OWI For New Mexico Driver in WI

Laquiesh Andrea Smith, 34 years of age, from Las Cruces, New Mexico has been arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol Eau Claire Post for operating a motor vehicle under the influence, 1st offense, with two children in the vehicle under the age of 16.

On April 10, 2023, at approximately 7:56 pm a Wisconsin State Trooper stopped a westbound vehicle for speeding on I-94 near mile marker 31 in St. Croix County. Upon approach, the Trooper detected the odor of marijuana. During the course of the investigation, the Trooper observed signs of impairment, and a subsequent investigation, including standardized field sobriety tests, was conducted on the driver.

The driver, Laquiesh Andrea Smith from Las Cruces, NM, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence 1st offense with minor children in the vehicle. Ms. Smith was transported to a local hospital for an evidentiary test and then to the Dunn County Jail. The children, ages twelve and eight, were released to an adult family member.

Ms. Smith is being charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence 1st offense with minor children, driver possessing open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, and possession of THC.
