So, we like to slow things down a bit for your “scroll down memory lane.” This is a collection of events that have landed on the pages of history on this day. Just a simple look back before you head forward into your new day.

So, grab your favorite sippin’ drink and let’s scroll!

Today is Saturday, May 28th, the 148th day of the year.  There are 217 days until the end of the year.

On this day:

In 1665, the first Baptist Church was organized in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1863, the first black regiment from the North, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, left Boston to fight in the Civil War. 

In 1897, Jell-O was first introduced. 

In 1957, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences was established.

In 1959, monkeys Able and Baker safely returned to earth following a trip into space.  They became the first animals retrieved from a space mission.

In 1961, Amnesty International was founded.

In 1982, the “Orient Express” went back into service.  The train transports people across the European continent.

In 1998, 49-year-old actor, comedian Phil Hartman was murdered by his wife Brynn at their Encino, California, home.  She then killed herself.  He is best remembered for his years on “Saturday Night Live,” his role on “News Radio” and his voice work for “The Simpsons.”

In 2002, “Nancy Drew Mysteries” author Mildred Wirt Benson died at the age of 96.

In 2006, San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds hit his 715th homerun passing New York Yankees legend Babe Ruth for sole possession of second place on baseball’s all-time list. 

In 2010, actor Gary Coleman died at the age of 42.  Coleman, best known for playing the wise-cracking Arnold Jackson as a child star on TV’s “Diff’rent Strokes,” had entered a hospital in Provo, Utah just two days earlier after falling down the stairs at his home.   

In 2013 George Harrison’s widow, Oilvia, helped open a memorial garden honoring the former Beatle in Hertfordshire, England, just north of London.

In 2016, a gorilla named Harambe was shot and killed by the Cincinnati Zoo’s dangerous response team after a three-year-old fell into his enclosure.  The 400-pound gorilla was shot when he picked up the child and began dragging him around the pen.  The boy didn’t suffer any serious injuries.  Harambe’s death sparked outrage.

In 2020, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declares State of Emergency in Minneapolis following the protests over George Floyd’s death.

And that brings us here to this day.
