WI Coronavirus Notes: New Variant Detected, Hospitalizations Fall, Free Masks Available

 Public health managers in Madison say they’ve discovered a new coronavirus variant.

The county’s public health office yesterday said there is only one case of the new virus, but more are likely coming. Doctors say the new strain appears to be more contiguous than the original omicron variant, but they also say anyone who had the omicron may have immunity. Public health managers with the state say the new omicron strain has been found in 40 counties across the globe so far.

When it comes to starting a new months, Wisconsin’s coronavirus hospitalizations are falling nearly as quickly as they spiked.

The state’s Hospital Association yesterday reported just over 15 hundred people are in the hospital with the virus. That’s a drop of over 120 people from just last Friday. ICU cases are down to just 318. That too is a sharp drop from last week. Wisconsin set a hospitalization record about two weeks ago with over 22 hundred people in the hospital with the virus.

The Hy-Vee on Clairemont as well as the Walmart on Gateway Drive have free masks available right now. The CVS stores and the Target in Eau Claire say they should get their N95 masks in later this week.
