Blame Game Moves From Playgrounds to Capitol

Wisconsin’s state superintendent is blaming lawmakers for shortcomings in the state’s schools.

Superintendent Jill Underly delivered her State of Education speech yesterday and scolded lawmakers for what she said was too little school funding and too much meddling. Underly said a generation of school kids has known nothing but austerity. She also dinged lawmakers for trying to require new civics lessons. The Republicans who control the legislature say Wisconsin schools have more money than ever before. They say Underly wants more to spend on the bureaucracy, while they want to spend more on students.
