WI Prepares to Help Gulf Coast

The Red Cross of Wisconsin is preparing to send volunteers to the Gulf Coast to assist with hurricane relief in the wake of the massive storm taking hold of the region.

Hurricane Ida made landfall as a Category 4 storm in southern Louisiana Sunday afternoon, leaving thousands without power and areas like Laplace, Luling, and Destrehan under flash flood emergency.  One volunteer from the Wisconsin office is already deployed with the expectation that more will be heading south this week.  At least one person is confirmed dead as a result of the storm, as widespread damage is being reported this morning.

As of now,

Hurricane Ida is spreading devastation across Louisiana. NBC’s Bill Kairns says Ida will cross into Mississippi today.

It slammed into Louisiana yesterday with 150-mile-an-hour winds, on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.  It’s since been downgraded to a Category One, triggering dangerous storm surge and flash flooding.  Ida is also forecast to cross the Tennessee Valley tomorrow.
