The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office is putting out a warning to residents about a gift card scam.
Officers say they have had roughly three complaints a week over the past six months about the scam. Detective Sergeant Brian Trowbridge says the scammers typically pose as police or someone from an agency like the IRS and say they need to be paid in gift cards because there is a warrant for their arrest or they owe money. He says the IRS never calls people, and neither does law enforcement.
