The strong derecho that blew a destructive path across the Midwest last August is believed to be the costliest 24-hour storm in at least four decades.
The storm packed wind gusts of more than 90 miles an hour and flattened millions of acres of crops among other damage left behind in its path from South Dakota to Ohio. The storm is believed to have caused 11-billion dollars in damage, making it the second costliest severe storm event since 1980. Only the tornado Super Outbreak in 2011 that ravaged the Southeast did more damage across a four-day time frame.
