Thanks for joining. We’re glad you’re here! Now, let’s see what has happened on the calendar pages along the way “On This Day.”

Today is Saturday, December 26th, the 361st day of the year.  There are five days until the end of the year.

On this day:

In 1917, American railroads were taken over by the federal government for the remainder of WWI.

In 1919, an agreement around the transfer of Babe Ruth from the Red Sox to the Yankees was reached.

In 1933, the patent for FM radio was given to Edward Howard Armstrong.

In 1972, President Harry S. Truman died at the age of 88. 

In 1973, the first horror film Oscar-nominated for “best picture,” “The Exorcist” was released.

In 1974, actor, comedian Jack Benny died at the age of 80. 

In 1982, a computer was honored as “Time” magazine’s “Man of the Year.”

In 1991, the gun Jack Ruby used to kill Lee Harvey Oswald was sold at auction for 220-thousand dollars.  Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

In 1996, six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her family’s Boulder, Colorado, home.

In 2003, a six-point-three magnitude earthquake rocked Southeastern Iran leaving at least 30 thousand people dead and thousands of others homeless. 

In 2004, the death toll soared to more than 14 thousand in the wake of the most powerful earthquake to strike the planet in four decades.  The magnitude 9.0 quake triggered deadly tsunamis across parts of India and southeast Asia.

In 2004, NFL Hall of Famer Reggie White died at his home in North Carolina.  He was 43. 

In 2006, former U.S. President Gerald Ford died at his home in California.  He was 93.  Ford was remembered mainly for his controversial pardon of former President Richard Nixon a month after Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment for the Watergate scandal.  He is the only president never to have been elected either to the presidency or the vice presidency. 

In 2018, the first person, American Colin O’Brady, crossed Antarctica solo and unassisted.
