There are two obvious differences about the tree at the Wisconsin Capitol this year. One, it is much smaller and two, it is called a Christmas Tree.
Republican representatives Shae Sortwell and Paul Tittl put up the tree on Tuesday. Sortwell says he was disappointed that Governor Evers declined to put up the state’s official tree and didn’t want to see the hundred-year-plus tradition end because of the coronavirus.
But the lawmakers’ tree may not last. The Department of Administration, which oversees the Capitol, this week denied the representatives’ request for a permit to keep the tree up. Though, DOA says they can appeal.
