Gov. Evers Unveils Relief Package

Wisconsin’s governor is out with his proposal to help the state get past the coronavirus.

Governor Tony Evers yesterday introduced a 541-million-dollar coronavirus relief package. The highlights include an extension of unemployment benefits and eliminating the requirement that people look for work, a ban on evictions and foreclosures, and suspending another year of standardized testing for Wisconsin schools.

The package would also allow healthcare workers to collect workers’ comp if they test positive for the coronavirus. Of the 541-million-dollars the governor wants to spend, he says 75-million would be tax breaks for businesses hurt by the coronavirus outbreak.

But it’s not being cheered by everyone.

Across the aisle, the top Republicans in the Wisconsin legislature say they want to work with Governor Evers on a package to help the state get through the coronavirus, but they don’t like his ideas.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos yesterday said he wants new ideas that will help the state move forward. Vos said Governor Evers’ proposal to expand unemployment benefits and ban evictions is the same thing he’s been talking about since April.

Senate president Chris Kapenga says he hasn’t seen anything from the governor that he is excited about. Vos said Republicans want to help people get to back work, and help businesses stay open.
