Hello! Welcome to your weekend. As we look ahead to some beautiful fall colors and weather in our area, we start the day looking back.

Each Saturday morning we take a little “scroll down memory lane” with a peek back to the October 10th’s on the pages of history and see what happened on this day along the way.

On this day:

In 1877, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer is buried at West Point.

In 1911, the Panama Canal opens.

In 1935, the George Gershwin opera “Porgy and Bess,” opened on Broadway.

In 1952, “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” debuted on ABC Television.

In 1965, The Red Baron made his first appearance in the “Peanuts” comic strip.

In 1966, the game “Twister” was introduced by Milton Bradley.

In 1975, Academy Award-winning actress Elizabeth Taylor married actor Richard Burton, again.

In 1976, Meadowlands Stadium opened in New Jersey.

In 1977, “Broadway” Joe Namath ended his National Football League playing career.

In 1986, advertising executive Hal Mason died at the age of 69.  He created such popular commercial figures as the Pillsbury Doughboy and Mr. Clean.

In 1992, Michael Jackson’s first television concert aired on HBO.

In 1997, the major tobacco companies agreed to a settlement in the class-action suit brought against them by 60-thousand present and former flight attendants, who claimed secondhand smoke in airplanes had caused them to get cancer and other diseases.

In 2001, President Bush unveiled a list of 22 most-wanted terrorists, including Osama bin Laden and his associates.

In 2004, “Superman” actor Christopher Reeve died of heart failure at the age of 52.

In 2015, big crowds turned out to mark the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March in Washington, DC.  The original event brought African-American men together for one of the largest civil rights rallies in American history two decades ago.

In 2016, Red Sox star David Ortiz retired.  “Big Papi” played his final game for Boston as the Red Sox were swept by the Indians in the American League Division Series.

In 2018, category four Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida.  It killed 27 people in America.
