WI Sees COVID-19 Case Surge: Local School Goes Online, Homecoming Concerns at UWEC

State health and government officials are urging Wisconsinites to maintain social distancing and public face mask guidelines as COVID-19 cases continue to surge.

Governor Tony Evers said Tuesday the pandemic is not slowing down but picking up speed.  Some parts of the state are now among the worst “hot spots” in the country.  Residents are advised to limit gatherings to five close family or friends or less, keep distance, and wear masks in public places.

Wisconsin is reporting the highest single-day COVID-19 death toll since May.  On Tuesday, health officials reported 17 new coronavirus-related deaths; the most since May 30th when 20 fatal cases were reported.  At least 13-hundred Wisconsinites have died since the onset of the pandemic in March.

As we continue to navigate life amidst the pandemic, local educators are facing changes.

G-E-T High School is online for the next three weeks. This comes after two students and a faculty member tested positive for COVID-19. District officials say that while it doesn’t have a high number of cases, the contract tracing process required many of the faculty to quarantine, leaving the school shorthanded. In person classes are expected to resume on October 19th.

On campus, this week’s homecoming festivities at UW Eau Claire are raising concerns of a spike in COVID-19 cases.  While homecoming activities are being held online, school officials are urging students not to go bar hopping.

Health officials report coronavirus cases continue to soar in Eau Claire County, especially among 20 to 29-year-olds.
