WI ADDRESSES BACKGROUND CHECKS

Governor Tony Evers and other Democratic leaders are proposing a bill to close the state’s background check loophole.

The governor said today it’s time to stop ignoring the problem of gun violence and for elected officials to find the courage to do what is right.  The proposed bill would expand background checks for handgun purchases with exceptions like sales to a firearms dealer, military member or police officer.  Republican leaders say the Legislature will probably not take up the measure, but the governor says 81-percent of Wisconsin voters support universal background checks.
