DEBATE CONTINUES ON WI YOUTH PRISON

Lawmakers in Madison hope to know soon how they will replace the state’s troubled youth prisons.

The state’s budget writing panel yesterday agreed to let counties borrow about 25-million-dollars to build the replacements for Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake.  Governor Tony Evers originally pitched 90-million-dollars in borrowing to have the state pay for the new prisons.  Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake are supposed to close by the end of next year, but lawmakers say they’re willing to push that date out by about six months to give Milwaukee and Outagamie counties more time to build new youth facilities.
