EC Schools Prepare For Full Classrooms

Eau Claire Schools need teachers, but not as badly as some communities in the state. Superintendent Michael Johnson yesterday said there are 16 open teaching jobs right now, and another 40 open jobs in non-teaching positions. That is far better than some Wisconsin schools who are dozens or even over 100 teachers short heading into the new school year. Johnson says Eau Claire schools hired about 200 new people this summer, he’s not saying just how many of them are new teachers.

Victims of clergy sex abuse are not happy with the public funeral plans for Milwaukee’s former archbishop. The church is holding Rembert Weakland’ funeral at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist later this afternoon. After that he will be laid to rest in Pennsylvania. Rescue Beagles Land in FURever Homes

Almost all of the rescue-beagles sent to Milwaukee have found new homes. The Wisconsin Humane Society yesterday said all but three of the 62 dogs that came to Milwaukee in July have been adopted. The dogs came from a massive rescue in Virginia. The adoptions come as the Humane Society just picked-up another batch of dogs. There are now 30 more beagles waiting with foster families before they will be available for adoption in the coming weeks.

Election Investigation Over

The investigation into the 2020 election in Wisconsin is officially over. A judge in Waukesha yesterday dismissed former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman’s cases against the mayors of Madison and Green Bay. He wanted a judge to order the mayors to sit for a deposition in his investigation into the last presidential election. Gableman’s investigation came to an end when the state’s Assembly Speaker fired him earlier this month. Move In Begins

 It’s that time of year at UW-M. The university yesterday began freshman move-in. UW-Milwaukee expects about 33 hundred students to move into the dorms this week. Yesterday saw the beginning of the move-in rush. The school is suggesting that anyone not involved in move-in stay away from the area near campus to give students more of a chance to unpack and get settled.

Trek Recall Affects Bike Handlebars

Waterloo-based bike company Trek is recalling some handlebars because of dangers when falling or crashing.  A U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report says the recall impacts around 32-hundred bikes and 900 aftermarket handlebar stems in the U.S.  Trek says the affected products include 2022 Speed Concept SLR bicycles, 2021 and 2022 Emonda SLR bicycles, and all aftermarket Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebars.  Recalled items can be taken back to Trek for repairs or replacements.

Trempealeau Co. Horse Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) confirms that an unvaccinated yearling Standardbred gelding in Trempealeau County has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). It is the state’s first confirmed case of WNV in a horse this year. Update: Suspect Awaiting Possible Homicide Charges

A woman is behind bars on suspicion that she killed a man in a home in western Wisconsin.  Authorities in New Richmond say someone in the house contacted police early Saturday about the victim’s death.  The man was declared dead at the scene.  The suspect awaits possible charges of intentional homicide and resisting arrest.
