Construction Planned On Local Bridge

The Highway 124 bridge in Lake Hallie is likely going to stay one-lane until later this summer. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation yesterday said crews will likely start repair work on the bridge in June or July, and should be done by August. The bridge has been partially closed since last month when a logging truck hit one of the bridge’s bottom girders. Wis-DOT says 13 thousand cars and trucks use the Highway 124 bridge each day.

Confirmation Hearings Planned at Capitol

There will likely be some pointed questions for Governor Tony Evers’ team at the Wisconsin Capitol today. Lawmakers will hold the first confirmation hearings for the secretaries of Transportation, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and the Department of Financial Institutions. It’s not clear if each of the governor’s secretaries will have enough votes to be confirmed by the full Senate later on. Lawmakers refused to even give the governor’s people a confirmation hearing during his first four years in office.

Broadcasting Promised Amid Bankruptcy

The company that broadcasts Brewers, Bucks, and Minnesota Wild hockey games says it will continue to do its job even as it moves through bankruptcy. Diamond Sports Group, which owns Bally Sports, filed for Chapter 11 yesterday. The move is seen as a way to restructure debt. Diamond Sports and Major League Baseball say there are plans in place to continue broadcasting Brewer games this season. Eau Claire Co. Inmate Identified, Investigation Continues

We have an update in the case of an inmate death in Eau Claire. It was on Sunday, March 12, 2023 when a 29-year-old female was found and we now know who that was. Silver O. Jenkins, was found unresponsive in the Eau Claire County Jail. Oregon University President Has WI Connections

The University of Oregon has found its new president, on campus at UW-Madison.  John Karl Scholz announced yesterday that he is leaving Wisconsin to take over in Oregon.  Scholz is officially an economics professor at UW-Madison, but he has served as provost in Madison as well. He was one of the finalists for the chancellor’s job last year, but didn’t get that.  Scholz will be making 725-thousand dollars a year as Oregon’s new university president.

Where Did the Money Go?

Most of the people in Madison’s guaranteed income program went shopping or went out to eat with their free 500 dollars-a-month. The city started paying some families 500 dollars a-month in September.  Yesterday, the city released a breakdown of where that money went.  Nearly 60-percent was spent on shopping and/or food.  About 20-percent of the money went to a car or other transportation needs, and about 10-percent went to paying bills or rent.  Just over four percent of the money

Death Investigation Continues in Jackson Co.

Six people are in jail in Black River Falls as the sheriff in Jackson County is investigating a death.  There aren’t many answers about the case, but investigators say it began last week with a report of a missing person.  On Friday, deputies learned the missing person was actually dead.  They found the body, and then arrested six people.  None of them, however, are facing any kind of homicide or accidental death charges.  They are all either facing drug charges

Wheel Tax Rolls Forward

Eau Claire continues to inch toward a new wheel tax.  City engineer Dave Solberg yesterday said the 30 dollar per-year tax is better for the city than trying to raise money with a referendum.  Solberg says the cost of asphalt, curb, gutter, and sidewalk materials have all doubled over the past decade or so.  He says Eau Claire needs the one-and-a-half million-dollars per-year the tax would take in order to keep up.  Eau Claire’s city council is set to vote
