The Wisconsin Senate yesterday approved the plan which will have schools go back to teaching phonics as the basis for reading, and focus on making sure that kids are reading properly by the fourth grade. Small Plane Passed Inspection, Investigation Continues

Investigators say the small plane that crash-landed in Waunakee last week passed an inspection not long before takeoff.  The NTSB yesterday said a mechanic signed off on the plane just hours before it took to the skies.  The plane didn’t make it far, and the pilot was forced down on a city street in Waunakee.  Both the pilot and passenger were able to walk away from the crash.  The NTSB is not saying what caused the plane to lose power

Confirmation Vote Forced for WI Elections Administrator

Wisconsin’s beleaguered elections boss may be voted out of her job after all. The Wisconsin Senate last night passed a resolution to force a confirmation vote on Meagan Wolfe as Wisconsin Elections Commission administrator. Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu yesterday said commissioners voted earlier this week to appoint Wolfe to a second term. New Poll Peeks at Presidential Hopefuls

 Wisconsin voters are starting to make up their minds about the 2024 election. The latest Marquette Law School Poll shows 31 percent of Republican voters support former President Trump, compared to 30 percent who support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis, however, does much better in a theoretical head-to-head against President Biden, losing 49-47. As opposed to Trump who the poll says would lose that match-up 52-43. Gavel Drops: Life in Prison for Dunn Co. Murder

Ryan Steinhoff will never breathe a free breath again.  A judge in Dunn County yesterday sentenced Steinhoff to life in prison without parole from the brutal 2020 murder of Bruce McGuigan.  Investigators found McGuigan’s body in a mobile home in Downsville in 2020.  They say they also found evidence that he was beaten for hours and likely tortured.  A second suspect, Ashley Gunder, pleaded no contest in the case and is serving a 25-year sentence.  A third suspect in the

Murder Suspect Held on $1Million Bond

The suspect in March’s murder in an Ashwaubenon apartment complex is being held on a million-dollars bond. A judge yesterday ordered Prez Wade held on a seven-figure bond for the shooting death of his best friend, 23-year-old Braxton Phillips. Prosecutors say Wade told police he was drunk when he accidentally shot Phillips, but investigators say Wade tried to hide his involvement in the crime, and got help from his child’s mother, who was in a relationship with Phillips at the

The Candy Lofts Offer Sweet Development

 City leaders in Altoona are ready to add lofts at River Prairie Park.  The city council last week okayed the The Candy Lofts building project to go into the empty lot north of Cabin Coffee Company.  There will be five loft apartments, as well as space for two shops on the ground floor.  Planners say it’s been a decade in the making, and are excited for the change it will bring to the park area.

State Budget Moves Closer to Gov. Evers Desk

Wisconsin’s new state budget is halfway to Governor Evers desk. The State Senate last night approved the new, two-year spending plan that comes with a 99 billion-dollar price tag. The budget spends more on schools, roads, and first responders. The budget includes a four billion-dollar tax cut, as well as 32 million-dollars in cuts to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at the University of Wisconsin. DNR Reminds of Park Passes

Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources is reminding people that they need a sticker to get into a state park this holiday weekend.  The DNR yesterday suggested people buy their state park passes online, and skip the lines that sometimes clog state parks on busy holiday weekends.  An annual pass for Wisconsin’s state parks is 28 dollars, and you can buy them online at the DNR’s website.  The DNR says you can also find the rules for state parks, including check-in times

Animals Moved In

Milwaukee County’s zoo is the latest to have to deal with the smoky air. The zoo yesterday said it moved some animals inside to avoid the poor air quality. Zookeepers say just about every animal but the giraffes has been moved inside until the air clears. Yesterday was better, but forecasters say Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin spent the entire day under an air quality warning. The zoo said some animals may be back outside later today.
