Add nine shootings and one murder to Milwaukee’s 2023 tally. Police in the city say nine people were shot between Friday afternoon and last night. One of those people, a 23-year-old man, died in a shooting on Saturday. Saturday also saw a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old wounded. Friday’s shooting sent a 17-year-old to the hospital. Milwaukee Police say they made a couple of arrests in the cases.

The Chippewa River is starting to drop again, after cresting this weekend in Moderate Flood Stage.  The 20-foot crest at Chippewa Falls is the seventh highest in recorded history.   At Eau Claire the crest was the eighth highest.  Commanders at Fort McCoy say they are accepting claims from anyone who saw damage from this month’s wildfire. The fort posted that anyone who saw property damage or an injury because of the fire can submit a claim to the base’s claims office. No one was hurt in the fire which burned about three thousand acres near the fort, and started back on April 12th. The fire did damage some buildings, and prompted some evacuation orders. Republicans want to use the state’s seven billion-dollar surplus to help pay for a shift away from the current income tax, to a lower flat tax. Wisconsin added nearly 13 million trees in the state last year. Governor Evers’ office updated his Trillion Trees plan on Friday. The governor says more than 12-point-nine million trees were planted, and more than two thousand acres of forestland were conserved in the state in 2022. The governor signed a proclamation back in 2021 declaring that Wisconsin will plant 75 million trees across the state by 2030.

Work is now started for the coming new Costco store in Eau Claire.  Crews are clearing the land on Black Avenue, located just east of the North crossing.  The land was once a family farm.  Most people on social media are welcoming the members-only warehouse, but some who live in the area say they will miss the quiet residential traffic.  The store is scheduled to open late this year or in early 2024.

Flooding along the Mississippi River is forcing some Grant County families to evacuate.  The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Mississippi and surrounding tributaries on Saturday.  The county’s Emergency Management Services Department, the flooding is predicted to be the second-highest flood crest ever.  Emergency officials don’t expect the river to crest until next Saturday and Sunday but high water has already forced road closures on County Highway X between Bagley and Wyalusing and County Highway C between
