Birth Control Legislation Moves Forward

State law changes that would allow pharmacists to prescribe birth control are getting the go-ahead from the Wisconsin Assembly.  AB 176 was approved yesterday, with only eleven Republican lawmakers voting against it.  Current state rules allow only doctors to prescribe hormonal contraceptive pills and patches.  Representatives passed legislation to make the same changes last year, but, that bill did not make the public hearing stage in the Senate.

Local Donation Pays Off School Lunch Debt

The Eau Claire Area School District will be able to pay off its school lunch debts thanks to the generosity of an area church and a food pantry. Yesterday the district was presented with a 29-hundred-dollar check from The Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd and a seven-hundred-dollar check from Ruby’s Pantry, which is a foodbank hosted by the church. Rock The River Set

The annual Rock The River fundraiser will be held this Saturday at Eau Claire’s Phoenix Park. The event offers a 10 K and 2 K walk/run and two youth races. Proceeds from the event will benefit three workforce development organizations: Junior Achievement of Wisconsin Northwest Area, L.E. Phillips Career Development Center, and Workforce Resource, Inc.

Safety Reminders Heat Up

Air Quality Alerts in Effect

Air quality alerts are in effect for all of Wisconsin the rest of the work week.  The National Weather Service says there will be enhanced ozone production through Friday night, mostly from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. each day.  The air quality is expected to become unhealthy for sensitive groups, and could become unhealthy for everyone in isolated places.

Multiple Fires Contained in Adams Co.

Fire crews are successful in containing multiple wildfires in Adams County.  The main fire broke out west of Friendship Tuesday afternoon and two smaller fires broke off from it.  The fires were contained last night and no buildings were damaged.  The cause is unclear.

Capitol City Votes Sanctuary City

The Madison Common Council passes a resolution designating the city as a transgender and nonbinary sanctuary.  It passed late last night.  Common council members say the goal of the resolution is to make Madison a safer place for the trans community.

Fireworks Safety Tips Make a Bang

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says nearly 100 people across the state visited an emergency room with a fireworks-related injury in 2019; Twenty five percent of those injuries involved children. Additionally, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission finds a 50 percent increase in injuries and deaths from fireworks-related incidents in 2020 compared to 2019.
