Milwaukee Sees Violent Weekend

Milwaukee’s shooting tally continues to go up. Police in the city say 13 people were shot over the weekend. Three of those people, including a one-year-old, died. Saturday was the most violent day, with eight people shot on Saturday alone. Milwaukee has over 60 homicides so far this year, not counting the weekend death toll.

WI Air Quality Alert in Effect

The red air quality alert for Eau Claire and other folks in northern Wisconsin continues until 8:00 this morning.  Wisconsin’s DNR issued the alert yesterday after a haze settled in across parts of Wisconsin as a result of the wildfires in Canada. Eau Claire is one of five counties to see a red air quality alert.  A red-level alert means the air is unhealthy for even healthy people and non-sensitive groups. The state is expected to update its warnings later this morning.

Lawmakers Look at Election Rule Changes

Republicans at the Wisconsin Capitol are looking to tighten up the rules for elections in the state. An Assembly panel will hear four pieces of legislation tomorrow that aim to change some of the rules for elections in Wisconsin. One would require photo ID for military ballots, while another would help local election managers with the cost of mandated special elections. Settlement Reached with Drug Maker

Wisconsin led the way to a 102-million-dollar settlement with the maker of suboxone. Attorney General Josh Kaul on Friday announced the agreement. Kaul and attorneys general from 41 other states accused the drug’s maker of trying to switch the medication from pills to patches, and then accused them of trying to ruin the market for pills. Suboxone is a drug used to treat opioid addiction. Wisconsin will get about seven-and-a-half million-dollars as part of the settlement.

Lawmakers Throw Flags at Soccer Funding

 The state of Wisconsin is sending two million-dollars to Green Bay for the NFL Draft, and may send 400 million-dollars to the Brewers for their stadium, but lawmakers are not sending any money to Milwaukee’s proposed downtown soccer stadium. The budget-writing Joint Finance Committee last week left the soccer project off of the list for the next state budget. An officer involved shooting remains under investigation. Police Respond to Sudden Spike in Overdoses

Janesville Police have been scrambling to keep up with a rash of opiate overdoses.  The Janesville PD said on Saturday that officers have responded to four suspected opiate-related overdoses in just a day and-a-half.  Police caution people against using any illegal narcotis and encourage people struggling with addiction to seek treatment.  They say it’s critical to call 911 immediately for emergency medical treatment in the event of an overdose.

WI Restaurant Honored, Awarded Grant

Wisconsin’s oldest Chinese restaurant has won a 40-thousand dollar grant.  The Cozy Inn Restaurant in Janesville is one of 25 restaurants in the U.S. honored with a Backing Historic Small Restaurants Grant through the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  The grants are aimed at helping to improve businesses and positively impact communities.  The Cozy Inn opened in 1922 and celebrated its 100th anniversary last November.  The owners plan to use the grant to restore the iconic neon sign of the

Canadian Wildfires Impact Air Quality

 The EPA says wildfire smoke from Canada is still impacting the entire Midwest region’s air quality.  The agency’s latest smoke map shows a light haze is still present high in the sky over Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois and Missouri among many other states.
