Lawmakers Look to Change Tip Minimum Wage

A pair of Democratic lawmakers want to end Wisconsin’s tipped minimum wage. Senator Chris Larson from Milwaukee and state rep. Francesca Hong from Madison yesterday reintroduced a plan to pay bartenders, waiters, and other tipped employees the same wage as everyone else. The two say tipped workers deserve a living wage. Paranormal Cirque Brings Spooky to EC

Eau Claire has a spooky circus in town for the weekend. The Paranormal Cirque opens today and runs through Sunday. The circus is for mature audiences — you have to be 17 years old to get in without a parent. The circus features acrobatics, illusions, mysterious creatures, and a haunted maze. Prison Time for Overdose Death

It’s prison time for an Eau Claire drug dealer who sold the fentanyl that killed another man. A judge yesterday sentenced Trenton Wik to 20 years in prison. Investigators say Wik sold a man what he claimed to be heroin. That man sold the drugs to a third man, who then overdosed. The victim was found dead in a car in Eau Claire in December of 2020. Wik will spend 10 years on parole once he has served his time.

Closed Door Meeting, Administrator Stays

Eau Claire County’s administrator will keep her job. The county board met behind closed doors to talk about Administrator Kathryn Schauf’s future. She faced criticism for how she handled the investigation into the county’s Human Services department. County supervisors voted after that closed-door meeting to ‘take no further action’ on Schauf’s future at this point.

Search for Suspect Continues in UW Student Attack

Madison Police are revealing a new detail in Sunday’s attack against a UW-Madison student.  Investigators said yesterday the young woman was sexually assaulted, in addition to being brutally beaten.  Police say they were not sure the young woman would survive, but now believe that she will live.  Madison Police are still not saying anything about suspects in the attack that happened early Sunday morning, though they have stepped up patrols throughout downtown.

Bridge Repair Begins, Detours in Use

It will be a bit of a mess on the Highway OO bridge in Lake Hallie for the next two weeks. Crews started repair work on the bridge yesterday. A logging truck hit the bottom of the bridge back in February. The work will mean Highway 53 will be closed overnight for up to three nights, and eastbound OO could be closed for up to 10 days. Road to Redistricting Remains Bumpy

The top Republican in the Wisconsin Assembly says questions about the state’s newest supreme court justice, and whether she can hear the state’s redistricting case, remain unanswered. The state’s Judicial Commission yesterday dismissed the complaint that accused Justice Janet Protasiewicz of violating court rules when she called Wisconsin’s political maps ‘rigged’ during her campaign for the Supreme Court last spring.
