Lawmakers Look at Midway

There’s a plan at the state capitol to make the Wisconsin State Fair tax free. Lawmakers will talk about the plan later today. The proposal would end the sales tax on tickets to the State Fair, and to the State Fair Park. Lawmakers would have to create a special sales tax exemption for the State Fair, because right now there’s a tax on tickets to all ‘amusement, athletic, entertainment, or recreational events’ that are not at county fairs.

PP Nurses Look to Unionize

Nurses at Planned Parenthood’s clinics in Wisconsin are looking to unionize. The Wisconsin Federation of Nurses & Health Professionals yesterday said nurses at clinics in Madison and Milwaukee have agreed to join the union. The election will be set next week, and Planned Parenthood said it supports its workers right to join the union. There  are already unionized clinics at Planned Parenthood sites in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

WI Casino Hopes New Concert Venue is a WIN

It looks like Milwaukee’s casino will continue to grow. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel yesterday reported that the Potawatomi Casino plans for a new, six-thousand-seat concert  venue. The project is expected to cost at least 200 million-dollars. Potawatomi managers didn’t comment on the report, but sources close to the project say the idea is to break ground early next year. Wine Time Stretches Past Nine

Wisconsin wineries can now stay open past nine P-M and until bar time. The new state law is meant to give wineries similar opportunities as bars, and more abilities to host special events. New open time limits are 2am during the week and 2:30am on the weekends. The law will also allow breweries to produce products like canned cocktails and sell beer that wasn’t made in Wisconsin in tap rooms.

Morning Crash Under Investigation

On January 3rd, 2024 at 6:10 a.m., the Eau Claire Police Department and Eau Claire Fire Department responded to the intersection of State Highway 93 and East Hamilton Ave. for a crash involving a sedan and a garbage truck. Homicide Numbers Drop in MKE

Milwaukee did not set a record for homicides in 2023. The city’s homicide count for last year stands, for now, at 161. That’s down from the 215 murders in Milwaukee in 2022, and the 194 killings in the city in 2021. Milwaukee’s mayor is crediting the drop on partnerships between his office and the community. Kidnapping Suspects Wave Right to Extradition Hearing

Two of the three kidnapping suspects arrested in southwest Wisconsin for kidnapping an eleven-year-old have agreed to go back to Indiana to face charges. Sara Gaudino and Isaiah Schryvers yesterday waived their right to an extradition hearing. They will be sent back to Wells County, Indiana, to face charges there. WI Judge Rules on Ballot Addresses

A judge in Dane County says absentee ballots in Wisconsin don’t need a full address to be counted this year. The judge yesterday said the state law dealing with addresses on absentee ballots doesn’t specify just what information is required, therefore he says election clerks cannot toss ballots that don’t have all the information.
