Alzheimer’s and Dementia Study Planned

A grant totaling 150-million dollars will be given to UW-Madison for a five-year Alzheimer’s and dementia study. This is the largest grant given to the Universities by the National Institutes of Health in its history. Money will go toward analyzing biological markers in people with denmentia or are at risk. Two-thousand people across the nation will participate in the UW-Madison-led study.

Search for Missing Woman Ends

The search for a missing Black River Falls woman has come to a sad end. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office yesterday said a utility worker found 53-year-old Stacy Shramek’s body. She’s been missing since Thanksgiving. The worker found her body in the water near the Black River Falls Dam. No one is saying yet just how she died. The sheriff’s office says it is investigating.

La Crosse Man Faces Charges After Explosion

A La Crosse man who has a history with the police is facing charges after officers say he fired something at them on Monday. The ‘projectile’ exploded with a flash when it hit the squad car. No one was hurt in the explosion. Officers quickly arrested 30-year-old Shawn Keller. This is the fourth time in the past six months that La Crosse Police have arrested Keller for throwing something, shooting something, or spitting at officers.

Man Facing Homicide Charges in Deadly Wreck

The suspect in a deadly drunk driving wreck in Waupaca County apologized in court yesterday. Scott Farmer is charged with killing a brother and three sisters when he smashed into their SUV back in December. Prosecutors say Farmer was drunk, and had an open bottle of vodka by his side at the time of the crash. Farmer already has four OWI convictions on his record. In addition to another OWI charge, Farmer is looking at homicide charges for the wreck.

Voting Van Ruled Illegal, Gov. Evers Talks Maps

A judge says Racine’s mobile voting van from two years ago is illegal. The judge on Monday said nothing in Wisconsin’s elections law allows for cities or counties to drive around and host in-person absentee voting events. Racine used the van in the 2022 elections, and defended the van by saying there’s nothing in state law that specifically bans them. Chippewa Man Pleads Guilty, Sentenced

A Chippewa Falls man is sentenced to one year in jail and must pay up to ten-thousand dollars for two victims’ mental health treatment. Nicholas Gonzalez pleaded guilty for sex crimes against two fifteen-year-old girls. One victim says Gonzalez assaulted her while they were on a walk, and the other says he attempted to.
