EC County Looks for Climate Action Plan Input

Eau Claire County is looking for feedback on its climate action plan. The county held an open house last night, and will hold another one tonight on the plan to reduce emissions and focus on sustainability. The county’s action plan is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030. There is also a community survey to get ideas. Trial Delayed

A judge’s pending leave could push the Lily Peters murder trial in Chippewa County back til next year. Judge James Isaacson last week announced that he is taking a leave of absence. He said he hopes to be back in eight to 10 weeks. That will leave just two judges in Chippewa County. Court administrators say there will be delays at the courthouse. It will be a very busy day at the Wisconsin Capitol today. Both the State Assembly and the State Senate will be in session. Lawmakers are looking to wrap-up for the spring. Page Turns on Library Hours

Eau Claire’s library is considering reopening on Sundays.  Before the coronavirus, the L.E. Phillips Library was open on Sundays during the school year. But the library has been closed on Sundays for four years now. The library’s Isa Small says they are talking with visitors and the folks who work at the library to get some feedback. But library managers say opening on Sundays would likely mean closing earlier throughout the week.

Menomonie Man Sentenced, For Sexual Assault of Child

Dunn County District Attorney Andrea Nodolf announced that, Kory Cockeram was sentenced to 25 years in prison following a trial by jury. On October 17, 2023, a Dunn County jury found the defendant guilty of multiple counts of child sexual abuse between July, 2012 – March, 2013 when the victim was four to five years old. New Legislative Maps Approved In Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s governor has approved new legislative maps. The Republican-majority state Legislature passed the maps along to the Supreme Court last Tuesday. Governor Tony Evers signed them this morning. The approved maps were drawn by Governor Evers, and he says they’re the first fair maps Wisconsin has seen in the past 50 years. The maps were initially overturned by the Wisconsin Supreme Court last December.

Madison Police Chief Will Be Inducted In Evidence-Based Policing Hall of Fame

Madison’s police chief will be one of eight people inducted into the Evidence-Based Policing Hall of Fame later this year. The Hall of Fame, based at George Mason University in Virginia, inducts members of law enforcement who use science and research in their decision making. Chief Shon Barnes has been with the Madison Police Department since 2021, and started his career in law enforcement in 2000.

Teen Job Bill Headed to Governor’s Desk

A bill headed to the Wisconsin Governor’s desk would eliminate the work permit requirement for 14- and 15-year-olds. The bill has already been approved by both the state Senate and Assembly. If approved, 14- and 15-year-olds would be able to get jobs without their parents’ consent.  No changes would be made to the hours they’d be able to work.

UW-Stout Teach Day Gives HS Students a Glimpse of Possible Career Path

ABOVE PHOTO: Teach Day activities included hands-on projects in each of the seven undergraduate teaching majors offered at UW-Stout.  High school students who attended Teach Day at University of Wisconsin-Stout learned quickly that the teaching profession, like the university’s other majors, is about doing. Soon after arriving, the 94 students from 11 regional high schools were working on hands-on projects such as designing a billboard, writing a multigrade lesson plan and creating a public service announcement.
