Transit Capital Assistance Funds Announced for Wisconsin Communities

Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld announced that applications are now being accepted for the Transit Capital Assistance Grant Program to fund the replacement of eligible public transit buses under the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust. Judicial settlements require Volkswagen to pay more than $2.9 billion into an Environmental Mitigation Trust Fund, for violating the federal Clean Air Act by selling diesel engine vehicles that utilized software designed to cheat on federal emissions tests by reporting inaccurate data on nitrogen oxide

Marshfield Clinic Announces Furloughs

Hundreds of workers at Marshfield Clinic locations across the state are being furloughed. The health system made the announcement yesterday. Three percent of Marshfield’s nearly 12 thousand workers are being furloughed. Marshfield says the furloughs will be in ‘largely non-patient-seeing departments, including leadership roles.’ The furloughs come after a wave of belt-tightening back in November, and after talks about a merger with Essentia Health fell through last week.

North High Incident Explained

The principal at North High School says Friday’s gun scare was a ‘concealed carry issue.’ Principal Kim Koller sent a note home to parents after police were called to North last week. The note explains that a food delivery driver had a gun, but never walked into the school, and never threatened anyone. Koller told parents that there was never ‘any known intent to harm students or staff at North.’

Lawmakers at the Wisconsin Capitol are once again looking to require kids to learn cursive. An Assembly panel will take-up the idea tomorrow. Supporters say kids need to learn how to read and write cursive in order to have a better understanding of the world, or to simply sign their names. The proposal before lawmakers would require that kids be able to both read and write cursive by the end of the fifth grade.

Wade Makes Slam Dunk Donation to Marquette

Former NBA player Dwyane Wade is making another mark on Marquette. Wade yesterday announced a three million-dollar gift to the school, to be used for scholarships and facility upgrades. Wade, of course, is a Marquette alum and led Marquette to a Final Four appearance. He told the crowd at yesterday’s game that Marquette helped change his life, and said he wants to give that opportunity to other young people.

Piggybanks Plump: World’s Richest Men Double Wealth

A new report says the world’s five richest men have more than doubled their wealth since 2020. According to the non-profit Oxfam, the combined wealth of the elite group that includes Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and investor Warren Buffett jumped from 405-billion-dollars to nearly 870-billion in the past three years. In issuing the report, the charity called on governments to “reign in corporate power” to reduce the gap between the ultra-rich and the rest of society.

Free Fishing Event Cancelled, New Plans Hooked

The YMCA of the Chippewa Valley is cancelling the Learn to Fish Free Fishing event at Ojibwa Golf & Bowl this Saturday, January 20. This decision was made based on guidelines from the Wisconsin DNR. The event is cancelled due to insufficient ice depth at the fishing location. Authorities Seeking Tips in Case of Stolen Camper

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of a 26-foot 2022 Forest River Shasta pull behind camper.  The theft occurred late December into early January.  Investigators did a canvass of the area and discovered a vehicle involved with this theft.  Investigators are asking for help to further the identity of the operator/owner of the truck.
