DATCAP Confirms EEE in Marathon Co. Colt

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) confirms that a 5-month-old colt in Marathon County has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). It is the state’s first confirmed case of EEE in a horse this year. In 2024, DATCP documented 10 cases of EEE in horses; access an online map of the 2024 cases. On Saturday, thousands of protesters filled streets in more than 60 Wisconsin cities as part of the nationwide “No Kings” rallies opposing President Trump’s administration. Demonstrations in Green Bay, Appleton, Madison, Milwaukee, and other cities drew large turnouts, with organizers estimating more than seven million people participating nationwide. Sugar River Wildlife Area Expands, Opens to Public

Dane County Executive Melissa Agard says Sugar River Wildlife Area is now open to the public Thursday.  Access has now been expanded to 923-acres with turkey hunting, trout fishing and other related activities.  Over the last few years the county built parking lots, removed buildings and set-up signs.  Agard says it’s an important space where the public can “connect with nature and the past”.

Lawmakers Question DPI Over Conduct Cases

State lawmakers are questioning how the Department of Public Instruction handled teacher misconduct cases.  This concerns more than 200 allegations of grooming or sexual misconduct.  Critics say DPI lets teachers resign and surrender licenses to avoid findings and public disclosure.  The Assembly education committee has called a hearing for State Superintendent Jill Underly to explain the agency’s response.  Underly says no wrongdoing occurred and that surrendering a license results in a lifetime teaching ban.

PFAS Settlement Awards Millions to City

The City of Wausau has been awarded nearly three-million-dollars from a PFAS settlement with 3-M.  This adds to an earlier check for a combined total also just under three-million-dollars.  The funds will help cover PFAS cleanup costs, including capital expenses, debt service, and water rate stabilization.  City leaders say the money marks progress but won’t fully cover remediation costs.  Officials expect more funding from a DuPont settlement and a Special Needs Fund.

Fatal Dunn County Fire Under Investigation

Elk Season Set to Start

Thirteen hunters will take to the lands of the Black River Elk Range starting tomorrow.  The group were selected at random from more than 26-thousand applicants for approval to hunt in the area with the start of elk hunting season.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports the state is currently home to more than 400 elk.
