The Langdale County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the discovery of human remains found after a house fire.  First responders answered a call to a reported fire in Elcho yesterday and found the remains after the fire was put out.  An autopsy is scheduled and the cause of the fire is under investigation.  At this time police do not suspect foul play. 

Police in Stoddard say two people are recovering from non-life threatening injuries after their house exploded.  Yesterday’s blast blew out windows in the home.  Investigators say it looks like a gas line sprung a leak, and then was sparked.  

On Sunday afternoon just after 3, the Menomonie Police Department responded to a 911 call of a disturbance taking place at 603 15 th St. S.E. Upon police arrival, contact was made at the residence when a body of a male subject was discovered and he was deceased. A Menomonie man is being charged for alleged abuse of residents at an assisted care facility.  Ramone Bridges is facing two counts of second-degree sexual assault.  The alleged sex acts took place at Serving Hands Care Facility in April.  He’s scheduled for an initial court appearance on Thursday. 

A woman accused of stealing from the Eau Claire Walmart will spend 90 days behind bars.  Her and two other Twin City residents reportedly took 47 thousand dollars’ worth of merchandise in 2017.  Their thefts spanned over two separate occasions.  Thirty-one-year-old Lasonya Miles will be on three years of probation after jail time, and must pay over 39 thousand dollars in restitution along with her co-defendants. 

Eau Claire hospitals will soon have to list their standard prices online.  Medicare is requiring all hospitals to post the prices online starting January 1st.  The hospitals must also make electronic medical records available to patients.  HSHS Sacred Heart and Mayo Clinic Health Systems say their websites will be ready tomorrow. 

A new ski hill is being built at Mount Washington.  The Flying Eagles Ski Club is working on the hill at the Eau Claire ski jump complex.  It will cost 800 thousand dollars and be 55 meters high.  The hill is planned to be used for training junior jumpers. 

A computer business in La Crosse has once again been hit by burglars.  This time thieves stole about 20 to 30-thousand dollars worth of Apple merchandise. Jeremiah Shimshak, a computer technician at The Mac Guys, says he believes the thieves are part of an international ring because the merchandise had been tracked to overseas.  Earlier this year, the store at 40 Copeland Avenue was robbed of 60-thousand dollars in merchandise.  The store is currently exploring options to bolster its security. 

Wisconsin’s lame-duck law limiting some power of the attorney general could be tested by a recent Wells Fargo settlement.  The Wisconsin Department of Justice reached an eight-point-six-million dollar settlement with Wells Fargo.  The agreement is part of a 575-million dollar settlement the bank reached with all 50 states over fake customer accounts.  The attorney general would typically be allowed to allocate the money to basically any lawful purpose of choice.  However, the lame-duck law mandates the settlement funds to be placed in

An Eau Claire man is going to prison for 16 years after being convicted of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.  The Leader-Telegram reports 45-year-old Jay Conklin pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this week after a criminal complaint claimed he had sexual contact with the girl as many as ten times.  After his prison sentence, Conklin will spend ten years on extended supervision and be a lifetime registered sex offender.
