A 40-year-old Eau Claire woman could go to prison for the rest of her life if she’s convicted of multiple drug and weapons charges against her.  Sylvia Erickson is accused of distributing meth between November 2018 and January.  Authorities also say she had a handgun back in November despite being a felon.

The discussion about Medicaid expansion in Wisconsin continues.  That brought Department of Health Services secretary-designee Andrea Palm to Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire yesterday.  Palm got a tour in addition to discussing Medicaid expansion, which is a priority for Governor Tony Evers.

6th OWI LEADS TO MORE JAIL TIME

Another drunken driving conviction is the reason why a man is going to spend more time behind bars.  If you were paging through the Leader Telegram then you likely saw the reports of Robert Kvapil from Eleva, he was sentenced to six months in jail.  This was his sixth time since 1992 that Kvapil had been convicted of an OWI-related crime.  His latest arrest happened on July 3rd.

CINDER CITY HEATS UP FOR NEW ATHLETIC COMPLEX

The School District of Altoona can officially get to work on its new Athletic Complex project.  The district said yesterday Prevea Health has contributed 75-thousand-dollars toward the project.  Fundraising efforts have been going on for two years.  The district had to rely on people and groups from the outside for donations of one-million-dollars.

BALDWIN RE-INTRODUCES DAIRY PRIDE ACT

Senator Tammy Baldwin is re-introducing bipartisan legislation design to help American dairy farmers.  The Dairy Pride Act would require non-dairy products made from nuts, seeds and plants to no longer be mislabeled with dairy terms such as milk, yogurt or cheese.  The FDA defines dairy products as being from dairy animals.  Baldwin says imitation products have gotten away with using dairy’s good name for their own benefit.

PACKERS SIGN FREE AGENTS

There are a few new Green Bay Packers as the team announced the signing of free agents. Outside linebackers Preston Smith and Za’darius Smith, along with safety Adrian Amos, were signed to boost the defense.  On the other side of the ball, the team came to terms with Billy Turner who has spent his five-year career playing offensive guard and tackle for Miami, Baltimore and Denver.

WI WINNERS HOLDING TICKETS

While the historic Powerball jackpot rolled over Wednesday night, a pair of Wisconsin ticket holders each won $50,000 in the latest drawing. The winning tickets were purchased in Marathon and Washington counties. Marathon County’s win came in Wausau on a ticket sold at Kwik Trip on 4701 Rib Mountain Dr. The winning ticket in Washington County was sold at Mayfield Mobil on 2545 Mayfield Way in Richfield.

DEPUTY PLEADS GUILTY TO SEX CRIMES

A Minnesota sheriff’s deputy charged with sex crimes in Barron County is pleading guilty.  Jeffery Masek appeared in court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to child enticement-sexual contact and attempted second-degree sexual assault of a child in a case where he’s accused of using his computer to ask for sex.  He was also charged with using a computer to facilitate a sex crime but had that charge dropped.
