RATE HIKE COULD CAUSE STINK

City utility bills in Eau Claire may be rising in 2019.  The city council is holding a meeting tonight and a vote on Tuesday to decide on whether or not to add a ten percent sewage increase beginning on January 1st.  The city is also considering raising other fees slightly including water and storm water.  The city manager says the uptick in fees is part of a plan to upgrade the city’s southwest side that processes sewage.

 The organizers of this year’s Oktoberfest in Chippewa Falls are donating thousands of dollars to area charities this week.  The Leader-Telegram says more than 35 community groups will be presented with contributions Tuesday for donating time at the festival.  About 20-thousand dollars is expected to be donated at the ceremony.  Organizers say Oktoberfest has managed to donate over 345-thousand dollars to local charities since it started 16 years ago.

FIERCE FREEDOM FIGHTS HUMAN TRAFFICKING

A company in Altoona is doing its part to educate the community about the dangers of human trafficking.  Fierce Freedom held its Freedom Boutique yesterday where people could buy clothes to raise money for the survivors of human trafficking.  Not only were people able to buy clothes to donate, they were also asked to donate hygiene items to be given away to survivors as well.

NO IF’S, AND’S …OR BOTS ABOUT IT!

Middle school students in Chippewa Falls are using an after school program to learn about robotics.  This weekend about 24 students gathered for the Voyager program at Chippewa Falls Middle School and competed in a robotics competition.  Students had to construct a three-pound robot that would fight against other robots in an arena.  The organizers say Voyager gives middle school students a chance to learn basic robotics, but that they’ll have a chance to learn more advanced technology in high

LIVES LAID TO REST

Friends, family members, and neighbors in a small Wisconsin city are saying their final goodbyes to the three Girl Scouts killed in a hit and run accident last weekend.  The funerals for 10-year-old Haylee Hickle, her mother Sara Schneider, and 10-year-old Autumn Helgeson were held Thursday in Chippewa Falls.  Nine-year-old Jayna Kelly’s funeral took place Friday. The three girls died when police say 21-year-old Colten Treu drove off the road while high and ran into the group. He’s been charged with multiple counts

Eau Claire is helping the Hmong community celebrate their New Year.  A two day Hmong New Year celebration was held over the weekend to celebrate yesterday’s holiday.  The celebration included dancing and singing competitions,authentic Hmong food, games, performing arts, and vendors.

HEALTHCARE IN WI COULD GET RX FOR CHANGE

Governor-elect Tony Evers could make some significant changes to healthcare in Wisconsin.  Evers has vowed to expand Medicaid and remove Wisconsin from a lawsuit attempting to scrap the Affordable Care Act.  The Legislative Fiscal Bureau reports that Wisconsin is one of 17 states that haven’t taken federal funding to expand Medicaid.  Evers is predicted to allot over 200-million-dollars in federal funding for Medicaid expansion in his biennial budget.  This could extend coverage to about 80-thousand more individuals.
