SMILE! LAMBEAU KICKS OFF A “GOUDA” TIME

The biennial U.S. Championship Cheese Contest is about to begin.  Volunteers spent last Thursday at the WOW Logistics warehouse among 100-million pounds of aging cheese as a backdrop, and unpacked, labeled, and repacked a record over-25-hundred entries for the contest.  The event begins tomorrow in the atrium of Lambeau Field.

UWEC CELEBRATES NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE

A special annual event is celebrating Native American culture in Eau Claire.  The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire hosted its Education Pow-Wow Saturday in Mcphee Center.  The event included dance performances and a feast, and was a way to bridge the past with 21st century Native American people.  The celebration was presented by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

CONCERT HITS HIGH NOTE FOR AREA FOOD BANK

The Chippewa Valley Area Singers Involved In Neighborhood Giving, or CVASing, is once again raising money for an area food bank.  The group held two concerts yesterday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.  Both events together raised about six-thousand dollars for Feed My People food bank.

LOCAL EVENT ENDS “HAPPILY EVER AFTER…”

An annual event is offering kids the chance to experience a medieval adventure.  The Eighth Annual Royal Tea Party happened yesterday at the Children’s Museum of Eau Claire.  Children attending were able to dress as princes, princesses, knights, and dragons while participating in hands-on learning activities.  The event included a catapult contest, creating your own castle, and making princess hats.  Kids could also get their hair done at the Castle of Curls and get their face painted before enjoying a

THOUSANDS CAMPED OUT AT RV SHOW

The 40th annual RV show is over for the year in Eau Claire.  The event wrapped up yesterday after its first year at the Chippewa Valley Expo Center.  The show featured over 50 RVs from four different local dealers and was free to attend.  Organizers believe between two and three thousand people attended throughout the event.

WORKING TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS

Area cities and villages are working to reduce climate change-causing carbon emissions.  Fitchburg, Marshall, Middleton, Monona, Stoughton, Sun Prairie and Waunakee are partnering with research firm Seventhwave.  This Madison-based energy consulting firm will help develop energy plans for each city to help reduce their carbon footprint.  The firm is being funded by a 200-thousand-dollar grant from the state Office of Energy Innovation.

UW PROGRAM TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTHCARE SHORTAGE

A certificate program at University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks to fill gaps in the mental healthcare shortage.  The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says over half of people who need mental health services in Wisconsin don’t receive them.  This problem is reportedly even more pronounced in rural areas of the state.  So, in an effort to combat the issue, UW is offering an 18-month capstone program for licensed nurses with masters degrees.  Most of the program’s clinical rotations happen in areas outside of Madison, which really

REACTION TO GOV. EVERS BUDGET PROPOSAL

Governor Tony Evers’ proposed budget is being mostly met with applause from Madison and other municipalities.  Yesterday, Madison Mayor Paul Soglin said “for the first time in eight years, we welcome a state budget.”  The parts of the budget that are being cheered the most are the ideas of more state aid and potentially more funding for transit.  Jerry Deschane, the executive director of the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, says it’s “truly a pro-local government budget.”  However, it’s unclear if

LACROSSE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR GETS PRISON TIME

A  former La Crosse Catholic school administrator is getting prison time for sexual assault.  On Wednesday, 60-year-old Steven Smolek was sentenced to nine-months in jail for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old in 2015.  The teen victim said Smolek sent him nude pictures on a social networking app.  Then he invited the victim over to his Mosinee apartment for pizza and a movie, where the assault happened.  La Crosse police say this isn’t the only instance of Smolek engaging in conversations with
